This class is a demonstration and designed for those who want to expand their baking skills to include galettes (open faced tarts) both sweet (apple and frangipane) and savory (leek and kale). We will start with the crust for each, easily made in the food processor –and the dough comes together in a kitchen towel.

Then we will make an almond paste (frangipane) to bake underneath the apples. Galettes have many variations, including the crust, which we will discuss in class. You will leave with a pie crust saying “galettes are easier than pie!”

Please contact us 48 hours in advance for an updated listing. This class is appropriate for ages 18 and up. If you’d like to bring a child, please let us know.

THE BOSTON SCULPTORS GALLERY

LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE BOSTON SCULPTORS GALLERY OUTDOOR EXHIBITION
Exhibit Closing Sunday, October 30th

Prosthesis for a Giant pays homage to an ancient copper beech tree that once grew outside Highfield Hall. All that remains of the huge tree is the stump upon which the sculpture is physically attached. The base transitions to a vertical trunk that extends upward and supports a circle of arching limbs, topped with a young European beech tree that has been kept alive all summer through the drought to be planted on the grounds following the close of the 2022 exhibition Boston Sculptors Gallery @ 30.

Andrews incorporates 3D computer modeling tools in his sculpture. He states that computer-aided tools allow him to work beyond previsualization and on to precise cutting of materials. As a result, he can explore deeper levels of detail and complexity. 3D scanning and 3D printing tools now available have opened doors to creating new forms that he is just beginning to explore. Andrews has been a Professor of Fine Art at Northeastern University for nearly 3 decades.

FULL MOON REIKI RESET

GUIDED RELAXATION AND SOUND BATH
NEW Online Fall Series
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm (EST)
$20/members $25/non-members

Please join Victoria and Yves Vandeplas for this virtual guided breathing and relaxation, followed by a planetary gong and crystal bowl sound bath with energetic reiki harmonization.

The full moon is a time to let go of anything that no longer serves you, and create space for anything you’d like to call in during the weeks ahead. For those who are sensitive, the energy of the full moon also tends to intensify whatever emotional state you are in, so it’s the perfect time to get centered.

We suggest that you attend the zoom class somewhere where you can lie down, wear comfortable clothes, have a blanket or two handy, socks if your feet get cold and anything else you might want to feel comfortable lying down. For a better sound experience, please have earphones on for the sound bath portion of the class.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK FROM LISA WALKER

EGGPLANT SOUP

This recipe has been adapted from a Sunset Magazine recipe that I first cooked 22 years ago and is still in frequent rotation at my house!

Half my family hates eggplant, or at least they think they hate eggplant, but they love this soup – little do they know they eat eggplant more than they think as I find it to be a secret ingredient in many other recipes!

This recipe is easy to put together and packed full of healthy vegetables. It’s also versatile with the type of protein you choose to use.

Enjoy!

GARDEN TIP FROM GEORGE CHAPMAN

THE BENEFITS OF CLOVER

Recent rains are doing much to help improve lawns that were decimated by drought and water restrictions this past summer. Last week I over-seeded some bare spots that had truly suffered with white clover seed. For years seed companies and fertilizer companies have tried to convince us that clover is a lawn weed but it can actually benefit the lawn by its presence.

Clover is a legume, in the pea family and these plants have the ability to convert nitrogen in the air to a form that is available in the soil for plants to use. This process is known as nitrogen fixing. Clover is deep rooted, stays green under drought conditions, is quick to grow and fast to spread. It adds diversity to the lawn and is beneficial to honey and native bees as well as to parasitic wasps that prey on other lawn and garden pests.

When over-seeding small areas clover seed can be used directly or mixed with grass seed when large areas are to be treated. So get out this fall or early spring and sow some clover to make for a more durable, sustainable lawn. Remember the words of Willie Nelson, “I’m looking over a four-leaf clover that I overlooked before."
