HAF Statement on the Closure of the College of St. Rose

Historic Albany Foundation, as most in our community, is incredibly saddened by the news of the impending closure of the College of Saint Rose, a wonderful institution of higher learning that has been part of our city's fabric for over 100 years. In addition to the grief we feel over the loss of students and the loss of jobs for the faculty and others, it is incredibly concerning that nearly 90 on campus buildings will become vacant, in addition to the affect on off campus housing when students depart.  Unlike many college campuses, St. Rose is situated within the city's vibrant Pine Hills neighborhood.  The loss of students, faculty and other employees will have a direct negative economic effect through the loss of patrons at surrounding neighborhood businesses.  HAF will be monitoring this situation and assisting in any way we can for the reuse of this campus, as well as advocating for the proper maintenance and mothballing of buildings once they are left vacant.
