ICYMI: End the Kansas Food Tax Immediately

Government and Politics

From: Kansas Governor Laura Kelly

KEY QUOTE: "Food is such a basic necessity that the state must do all it can to make sure that no one in a state as agriculturally plentiful as Kansas goes hungry."

End the Kansas food tax immediately

  • The state of Kansas has taken an important first step by passing legislation to phase out the state's food sales tax over the next several years. As  of Jan. 1, the state food sales tax went from 6.5% to 4% - it will go to 2% on Jan. 1, 2024, and to zero on Jan. 1, 2025.

  • This is a most welcome step, but it's not enough...it is appropriate that the Legislature totally end the food sales tax in its current session.

  • I am pleased that on the legislation to get rid of the state food sales tax that Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and the Republican-controlled Legislature were able to work together to come up with a plan to eliminate this tax, even if it did not do so as rapidly as it should have. Also Sen. Pittman is a Democrat and Rep. Proctor is a Republican. A telling example of how much good we can accomplish when we decide to work together.
