ICYMI: Get the Heck into Dodge

Government and Politics

July 29, 2022

From: Kansas Governor Laura Kelly

KEY QUOTE: "Thanks to a forward-thinking governor in Topeka, the countless connections made available through state and federal assistance, and local government and utilities working collaboratively on economic growth, we were well positioned to land this massive project. As a result, we’ve already begun to see other businesses considering locating or expanding existing operations here in Ford County and look forward to assisting as well."

-- After Governor Laura Kelly’s announcement last week that Panasonic plans to open an electric vehicle battery plant in De Soto, there’s a lot to be excited about here in Kansas. The $4 billion project is estimated to create up to 8,000 jobs and is the biggest business investment in state history. But good news these days isn’t confined to the eastern side of the state. When it comes to economic development, Dodge City and the surrounding area have a lot to celebrate as well.

-- Last year we learned that Hilmar Cheese Company, a California-based dairy producer, will open a cheese and whey manufacturing facility in Dodge City. The state-of-the-art operation will employ 260 employees and represents a $600 million capital investment. It’s projected to create an additional $550 million in capital investment and 750 new jobs within a 50-mile radius of Dodge City with additional dairy development.

-- Here in Dodge City, we’ve also been working for over a decade to address our housing needs. Thanks to programs like the Community Housing Association of Dodge City, we’re constructing and rehabbing vacant properties throughout the community. The project is a win-win because it not only addresses the ongoing housing crisis, but it also cleans up blighted neighborhoods and teaches hands-on skills to the future workforce.

-- We need people to provide a vibrant workforce for our existing and new businesses. We’re working hard on recruitment through efforts such as our Dodge City Has Jobs website and we continue to maintain a laser-like focus on improving the quality of life in our community.
