Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Jan. 14-20:

Jan. 16 - Language: Intro to Spanish for Kids (Ages 7-13)

Kaw Prairie Church, 9421 Meadow View Dr., Lenexa, 5:35 to 6:35 p.m., Tuesdays, 7 sessions, $150 per person, $165 nonresidents

NEW!  Immerse your student in the vibrant world of language with our Intro to Spanish class for kids! We will start at the beginning, focusing on the Spanish alphabet, greetings, colors, numbers, and more essential content. Through the magic of songs, games, and exciting activities, learning Spanish becomes an unforgettable adventure. Activity number 32907.

Jan. 16 - Language: Beginning Spanish for Adults (Ages 13 & Older)

Kaw Prairie Church, 9421 Meadow View Dr., Lenexa, 6:45 to 7:45 p.m., Tuesdays, 7 sessions, $150 per person, $165 nonresidents

NEW! Embark on a journey of language with our Beginning Spanish Class for Adults! Whether you're new to the Spanish language or looking to refresh your skills, this class is the perfect starting point. We will focus on foundational grammar and vocabulary including greetings, colors, numbers, the Spanish alphabet, basic conversational phrases, and more. Join us in exploring the richness of the Spanish-speaking world and enhancing your linguistic horizons. Activity number 32908.

Jan. 16 - Art: Arm Knitting (Ages 16 & Older)

Jan. 16 - Art: Homeschool Art Adventures III (Ages 12-17)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Tuesdays, 1 to 3 p.m., 11 sessions, $237 per person, $261 nonresidents

Advanced and experienced artists who have developed a sincere interest in art will use skills previously learned as well as prior knowledge of art theory and history to do a deep dive into different art mediums and create intentional works of art. This class is designed to supplement your homeschool curriculum and encourage you to explore art through consideration, conversation, and creation! Activity number 32613.

Jan. 17, 18 - (2 separate classes) Art: Homeschool Art Adventures I (Ages 6-10)

Beginner artists with little to no prior experience or formal instruction will get the opportunity to learn basic art skills while exploring art history and art theory. This class is designed to supplement your homeschool curriculum and encourage you to explore art through consideration, conversation, and creation! Wednesday class beginning Jan. 17, activity number 32614. Thursday class beginning Jan. 18, activity number 32615.

Jan. 17, 18 - (2 separate classes) Art: Homeschool Art Adventures II (Ages 8-13)

Intermediate artists will hone skills learned in previous art experiences while following instructions and working independently, try out more advanced techniques and mediums as well as having an opportunity to explore art history and art theory. This class is designed to supplement your homeschool curriculum and encourage you to explore art through consideration, conversation, and creation! Wednesday class beginning Jan. 17, activity number 32616. Jan. 18 - Make: Homeschool Making & Engineering II  (Ages 12-17)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 1 to 3 p.m., 11 sessions, $237 per person, $261 nonresidents

NEW! Focusing on design and digital fabrication, this 11-week series will teach the basics of 2D and 3D design as well as introduce them to 3D printing and laser cutting. Other skills covered in this class include wiring basic electrical circuits and using hand tools. This class is designed to supplement your homeschool curriculum and let you explore art, making, science, and engineering in a hands-on way. Activity number 32619.

Jan. 18 - Special Interest: Dine & Discover - Opera Houses of the World (Ages 50 & Older)

Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Thursdays, 2 sessions, $54 per person, $59 nonresidents

NEW! Join speaker Don Dagenais for a two-day presentation of famous opera houses of the world. Don has traveled extensively over the past 40 years to attend operas throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. These two classes will cover the great opera houses of the world, their history and architecture, their performance history, and will include personal anecdotes from Don's experiences attending performances at these famous theaters. The presenter for this event will be on-site. Please note this event meets on Jan. 18 and 25. Meal provided both days. Activity number 33905.

Jan. 19 - Multi-Sport: Amazing Athletes (Ages 3-5)

Roeland Park Sports Dome, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, 9 to 9:45 a.m., 5 sessions, $102 per person, $112 nonresidents

Amazing Athletes uses a multi-sport program to introduce the fundamentals of ten different sports in a non-competitive environment. Children in Amazing Athletes routinely gain greater confidence, learn to combine fitness with fun, and develop six key motor skills. Equipment provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes. Jan. 19 - Preschool: Superhero Adventures Party (Ages 2-5 with Adult)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., $9 per person, $10 nonresidents

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s little superheroes ready for an epic adventure! This action-packed party will provide an unforgettable day of excitement, imagination, and fun. A famous superhero might even make an appearance! A themed snack and craft will be included. Activity number 33844.

Jan. 19 - Gymnastics: Ninja Clinic (Ages 6-12)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 4:30 to 6 p.m., $27 per person, $30 nonresidents

No matter their skill level, everyone can have a blast learning to be ninjas! Training will emphasize improving strength and agility through obstacle challenges and conditioning. Activity number 32346.

Jan. 20 - Dance: Pre-Ballet - MCAC Spring Session 1 (Ages 2-4)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Saturdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m., 7 sessions, $123 per person, $135 nonresidents

Your child will be introduced to the fundamentals of ballet in a fun and supportive environment. Our experienced instructor will guide your child through age-appropriate ballet exercises and techniques, helping to improve their balance, coordination, and posture. We’ll use creative games and activities to keep your child engaged and excited about learning ballet, while also promoting their creativity and self-expression. This class is perfect for young children who are new to ballet or have limited experience. No prior dance experience is necessary – just come ready to move and have fun! Parents are welcome to observe or participate in the class alongside their child as needed. Ballet shoes and leotard are required. Activity number 34102.

Jan. 20 - Theatre: Imagination Exploration - Spring Session 1 (Ages 7-10)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Saturdays, 9:15 to 10 a.m., 7 sessions, $130 per person, $143 nonresidents

In this fun creative drama class students can let their imaginations run wild, engaging in activities such as creative writing, improvisation, and group storytelling. Our goal is to encourage students to see the world around them with fresh eyes, to think outside the box, and to embrace their own unique perspective. We believe that fostering creativity and imagination is key to developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a lifelong love of learning. So come join us for an unforgettable exploration of the power of imagination! Whether your child is a natural-born storyteller or simply loves to create, this class is the perfect place to develop their skills, make new friends, and have fun! Activity number 32284.

Jan. 20 - Nature and Outdoors: Winter Nature Walk (All Ages)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 9:30 to 11 a.m., $10 per person, $11 nonresidents

Bundle up for the weather and join a naturalist to see the winter happenings on the trail. Waterproof shoes are recommended for snow or mud. If there is inclement weather, an alternate program will be held indoors. Activity number 33871. For more information call 913-826-2800.
