Fellowship News + Application Open

We wanted to share the good news that Kala is recommended for a National Endowment for the Arts Grant For Arts Projects in support of Kala's Fellowship residency! We're thrilled and wanted to let you know the application is now open for the next cohort of Fellowship artists. Artists receive $3,000, a one to nine-month artist residency with 24/7 access to Kala's facilities, one-month housing at the Higby (across the street from Kala) for artists from outside the Bay Area, a free class, and a culminating exhibition in the Kala gallery as a group. Thanks to support from Sustainable Arts Foundation, one of the six spots is designated for a parent artist (with a child under 18 at home) and thanks to an individual donor, one of the six spots is designated for a veteran artist (one who has served in the US armed forces).

Applications are due March 15, 2023 via slideroom

Community Art Workshop: Lunar New Year - Creating Paper Lanterns

Date & Time: Saturday, January 28, 12-3pm

Location: Kala Art Gallery & Community Classroom

Cost: Suggested donation of $0-$10

RSVP via Eventbrite

Lunar New Year brings families together to celebrate the new year, with lighting a lantern as a way to bring good fortune, make a wish, or set an intention. In many Asian cultures, the lantern during Lunar New Year gathers people and stories together. In this workshop, participants will design and build a unique lantern using matt boards and translucent materials, incorporating images and text. Participants will learn various book arts/printmaking tools and techniques to build and decorate their own lanterns to take home. We will explore pattern, adventures in time reversal, and the distance between the real and the ideal. This Lantern Mark workshop will be facilitated by artist Linda Zeb Hang and Kala staff.

*Drop-ins are welcome but please register upon arrival. This community workshop is open for all ages (5 yrs and up). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Mask-wearing indoors is required for all visitors in Kala’s gallery and community classroom. Space limited.
