Santa Rosa Emergency Management is hosting a "When Disaster Strikes: Prepare, Act, Survive" course at the Santa Rosa County Emergency Operation Center, 4499 Pine Forest Rd. in Milton. The purpose of this course is to teach community members how to prepare, take action and rescue response during a disaster. There are two dates registrants can choose from to take the course:

 - May 23-25, 6-10 p.m. each day.
 - June 30- July 1, 6- 10 p.m. on Fri., June 30, and 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Sat., July 1.

The course is FREE and open to the public, 14 years of age and older. Minors, wishing to participate, will need to complete a medical treatment release form during registration and have a responsible adult stay during the entire class. All participants must register for a free FEMA/SID number online at cdp.dhs.gov/femasid/register before registering to attend this course.

The one-and-a-half-day course, equaling 12 hours of instruction with hands-on application, focuses on:

 - Developing the mindset to prepare, act and survive in a community disaster.
 - Using survival strategies to rescue and care for yourself, your family and your pets during the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
 - Assisting in the search, light rescue, care and safety of your neighbors.
