Message from Library Director Pamela Monroe

The year 2022 was a whirlwind for me and our library system. I have officially completed my first year as your library director, and my excitement is bubbling over with what is to come. The amazing staff at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System has been really supportive in embracing the Essential Libraries Initiative, which was designed to help our community thrive. We look forward to making 2023 even better. On behalf of the staff of the Leon County Public Library, we wish you a happy new year!

The library's Community Resources Specialist, Mallory Adams, is available to connect patrons to social services, government benefits and local resources. Mallory can assist community members with completing the necessary forms and applications to obtain services like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, and employment.

Mallory is based in the Main Library, but she holds regular drop-in hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lake Jackson Branch Library on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month and at the Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.

Enjoy engaging virtual Author Talks with bestselling authors from a wide range of fiction and non-fiction genres. Tune in for these live events with interactive Q&As, or watch the recording afterwards. 

Upcoming virtual Author Talks include:

-Saturday, January 7 at 2 p.m.: Author Talk with Namina Forna, New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Ones and The Merciless Ones.

-Tuesday, January 17 at 2 p.m.: Author Talk with Dana K. White, bestselling author of Organizing for the Rest of Us and Decluttering at the Speed of Life.

-Tuesday, January 31 at 2 p.m.: Author Talk with Randall Munroe, New York Times bestselling author of What If? and the popular webcomic xkcd.

-Thursday, February 9 at 7 p.m.: Author Talk with Lana Harper, New York Times bestselling author of Payback’s a Witch and From Bad to Cursed.

Join Leon County Government for an engaging discussion with Dr. Lakeisha Johnson about the importance of reading diverse books with children and building strong language and literacy skills for all ages. The lecture entitled Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors: Utilizing Diverse Books will take place on Saturday, January 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library.

The program will discuss how books allow children to see reflections of themselves, their own experiences, and the world that others live in. Reading diverse books can provide an opportunity for children to step into other worlds by using their imagination. This is a family-friendly event, and there will be activities for children.

The Family Health Literacy Fair will take place on Saturday, January 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the Main Library. This event will feature more than 15 local health and safety organizations sharing information about their resources and services that are focused on physical and mental health and well-being. Attendees can attend a yoga demonstration and receive free dental, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) screenings.

Calling all teens and tweens! The new Manga and Graphic Novel Book Club takes place every third Friday of each month from 4-5 p.m. at the Lake Jackson Branch Library!

Participants will gain new insights and a sense of library community that will foster a lifelong love for reading, a new perspective, and an appreciation for sequential storytelling.

Families have four more opportunities to join us at Book Feast, the food-themed STEM & Craft Event. The whole family can?explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through fun activities that are inspired by children's books, including the classic Stone Soup, Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, and Saturday at the Food Pantry by Diane O’Neill.
