Lynnfield History Slides

Are you interested in Lynnfield history? Then you’ve come to the right library! The Lynnfield Public Library genealogy collection houses a series of slide kits that were created in the 1970s to preserve a visual record of historic features in Lynnfield.

The kits are located on a black cart in the Marcia Wiswall Lindberg Room - which houses our local history and genealogy collection. These slide kits depict historic Lynnfield homes including the Joseph Henfield House , Captain Thomas Flint House , and Joseph Tapley House. Other topics include the Lynnfield Common and historic photos of Lynnfield. Each blue plastic cased kit comes with slides, a cassette narration, and a transcript of the cassette. And, yes, we are talking old-school slide carousels. These slides can be viewed on our ViewScan machine in the genealogy room – just see the reference librarian for assistance.

Prefer to take your time viewing at home but don’t have a projector? No worries! These kits can be checked out for three weeks along with one of our slide viewers from the “Library of Things.” Please contact Pat Kelly at 781-334-5411 for more information.

New in the Library of Things

We’ve come to that time of year when nights are long and cold, holidays abound, and friends and family gather near to us. Light up the night with a game from our Library of Things Game Collection! We have forty games in our collection for all ages. We have board games like Clue, card games like Cards Against Humanity, and game sets like our newly added Bowling Set for Kids and Ping Pong. Celebrate the holidays and ring in the new year with a game or two! Be sure to check out what else is in our Library of Things, including puzzles, wireless hotspots, and Nintendo Switch Lites.

Several reasons will be explored with some audience participation encouraged. Basic methodology will be explained along with the first steps to beginning research. A few tips towards organizing a large genealogical project will be given. Record sources such as vital records (birth, marriage, death) will be explored along with census, passenger lists, naturalizations, and cemeteries. Examples will be given with noteworthy and common people from various time periods and ethnic groups. Recent advances in the field such as DNA and the internet with popular websites will be discussed. The resources of the Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) will be explained.
