Happy Valentine's Day, to all those lovers of Cinema out there -- may your week be sweeten by escaping to the movies this week. And we have quite a few for your viewing pleasure at the Film Center.

This weekend we present the Oscar nominated Short Films. They have reached the pinnacle of recognition by being nominated, now they compete for the golden statuette.

NEW THIS WEEK...

SCIENCE ON SCREEN – MELANCHOLIA with Guest Speaker DR. PETER VERES. FREE ADMISSION

Prior to the film, Harvard-Smithsonian Astronomer Peter Vereš will give a presentation entitled “DART – A Successful Planetary Defense Mission.” about NASA’s recent Double Asteroid Redirection Test. In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth… MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster film from director Lars von Trier.

WOMEN TALKING — Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. For years, the men have occasionally drugged the women and then raped them. The truth comes out and the women talk about their new situation. Sarah Polley’s film has been nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, and co-stars Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Jessica Buckley, Judith Ivey, and Claire Foy.

With all three categories rotating – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar ballot)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. CONTINUING THIS WEEK...

TURN EVERY PAGE explores the remarkable fifty-year relationship between two literary legends, writer Robert Caro and his longtime editor Robert Gottlieb. Now 86, Caro is working to complete the final volume of his masterwork, The Years of Lyndon Johnson; Gottlieb, 91, waits to edit it. The task of finishing their life’s work looms before them. With humor and insight, this unique double portrait reveals the work habits, peculiarities and professional joys of these two ferocious intellects at the culmination of a journey that has consumed both their lives and impacted generations of politicians, activists, writers, and readers.

LIVING is the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful. Oscar nom for lead Bill Nighy. LIVING sets a high bar for itself in setting out to remake a Kurosawa classic -- and director Oliver Hermanus and star Bill Nighy clear it in triumphant fashion.

THE WHALE is a drama directed by Darren Aronofsky (THE BLACK SWAN) and written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his 2012 play of the same name. It stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and

Samantha Morton. A reclusive English teacher (Brendan Fraser) suffering from severe obesity attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption. Brendan Fraser received an Oscar nom (Best Actor) for this once in a lifetime performance.

COMING ATTRACTIONS...

LET IT BE MORNING (Opening February 24th)

Let It Be Morning Creates a Poignant, Quietly Devastating Story of Home, Family and the Walls that Keep Us Apart. Let It Be Morning comes courtesy of the great Israeli Arab filmmaker Eran Kolirin (The Band’s Visit), who garnered a bit of controversy at last year’s Cannes Film Festival when his mostly Palestinian cast protested the premiere because the film was submitted as an Israeli production.
