Two Oscar nominee hopefuls open this Friday/weekend at the MV Film Center. If you haven't been back recently to the film center, we hope this week might be it. Come enjoy our comfy seats and the warm glow of cinema at its best.
NEW THIS WEEK...
BROKER — Drama/comedy written and directed by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (SHOPLIFTERS, LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON). The film follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption, to affluent couples who can't have children of their own. After an infant's mother surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home, the three embark on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own. Meanwhile, two detectives, Soo-jin and Lee, are on their trail. A MV International FF selection last September.
THE WHALE is a drama directed by Darren Aronofsky (THE BLACK SWAN) and written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his 2012 play of the same name. It stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton. A reclusive English teacher (Brendan Fraser) suffering from severe obesity attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption. Brendan Fraser deserves the Oscar nom for this once in a lifetime performance.

DECISION TO LEAVE — Winner of Best Director at Cannes in 2022, Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) returns with a seductive romantic thriller that takes his renowned stylistic flair to dizzying new heights. From a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. Did he jump, or was he pushed? When detective Hae-joon arrives on the scene, he begins to suspect the dead man's wife Seo-rae. But as he digs deeper into the investigation, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire.
CORSAGE — Empress Elizabeth of Austria is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. But in 1877, 'Sissi' celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter and tighter. While Elizabeth's role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her more and more restless in Vienna. Recently selected for the Oscar® shortlist in the Best International Feature category for the 95th Academy Awards, and world premiered at Cannes, where star Vicky Krieps won the Un Certain Regard Best Performance Prize.
Take a journey with EO, a gray donkey with melancholic eyes and a curious spirit. Beginning his life as a circus performer before escaping on a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside marked by absurdity and warmth in equal measure. Legendary filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski directs one of his most free and visually inventive films yet, placing the viewer directly in the heart and mind of the four-legged protagonist. Loosely inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, and featuring immersive, stunning cinematography by Michal Dymek coupled with Pawel Mykietyn’s resonant score, Skolimowski’s film puts the viewer in the perspective of its four-legged protagonist.
THE FABELMANS is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written and produced by Tony Kushner and Spielberg. It is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker himself who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles.

Theatre Operations Coordinator
Theatre Coordinator is responsible for the daily/year-round operation of the film center/cinema and coordination of part-time and volunteer staff (when needed in summer) to operate the center efficiently (show management, concessions, maintenance, etc). The Theatre Operations Coordinator must ensure the successful execution of all film and non-film events on time collaborating with several colleagues. Work schedule is afternoon-nights, weekends, and some holidays: typical off-season schedule (September to June) is daily Wednesday, to Sunday 3-10 pm with occasional 1 pm matinees on weekend. In summer it’s 6-10 pm, 5-6 nights a week (we're open every night). Some deviations to this schedule occurs during the year.

Brought Back by popular demand from last September's MV International Film Festival
Directed by Japan’s Kore-eda Hirokazu, the Korean-language “Broker” scored a best actor prize at Cannes for male lead with “Parasite” star Song Kang-ho. Playing like a scrappy road movie, more than a crime story, the film tells the tale of two chancers who are trying to arrange an adoptive home for an unwanted infant, the child’s mother who tags along, and two women police officers on their trail.

With his first film in seven years, legendary director Jerzy Skolimowski (Deep End, Moonlighting) directs one of his most free and visually inventive films yet, following the travels of a nomadic gray donkey named EO. After being removed from the traveling circus, which is the only life he’s ever known, EO begins a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside, experiencing cruelty and kindness in equal measure, all the while observing the follies and triumphs of humankind. During his travels, EO is both helped and hindered by a cast of characters including a young Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo), a Countess (Isabelle Huppert), and a rowdy Polish soccer team. Loosely inspired by Robert Bresson’s "Au hasard Balthazar", and featuring immersive, stunning cinematography by Michal Dymek coupled with Pawel Mykietyn’s resonant score, Skolimowski’s film puts the viewer in the perspective of its four-legged protagonist. EO’s journey speaks to the world around us, an equine hero boldly pointing out societal ills, and serving as warning to the dangers of neglect and inaction, all while on a quest for freedom.
RECENT EVENTS AT THE MV FILM CENTER
The Martha's Vineyard Film Center was the host for this January's Business After Hours Event, an event organized by Martha's Vineyard Chamber's of Commerce.
Held monthly, these Chamber-member hosted mixers are a great way to network and meet ?other business owners--all while enjoying complimentary food and drink! This was our first time hosting this event, and we think people enjoyed themselves!
We want to thank LITTLE HOUSE restaurant, CATBOAT COFFEE, and ROCCO'S PIZZA for supplying the tasty food.
