The 2022 Transportation Survey is available and we want to hear from you!

Each year, City staff asks Alameda residents who are older or have disabilities if its transportation programs are meeting people’s needs. This online survey is available at www.AlamedaParatransit.com until Monday, November 7, 2022. Hard copies are available at the Mastick Senior Center, all Alameda libraries, or you can call 510-747-7513 to request a copy.

AARP Smart Driver Standard Course
Wednesdays, October 12 & 19, 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Location: Media Room
Cost: $20 per person for AARP Members (AARP ID# required),
$25 per person for non-AARP Members,
FREE with proof of United HealthCare Insurance

The AARP Smart Driver Course is the largest classroom driver course specifically designed for motorists, age 50+.  The Standard Course is a two day, four-hour class (eight hours total) taught by a trained AARP Volunteer Instructor.  Registration and payment (CHECKS ONLY – payable to AARP) must be completed in the Mastick Lobby no later than two days prior to the start date of the class.

Pickleball: Beyond the Basics
Wednesdays, October 12 – November 2, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Location: Lincoln Park Pickleball Courts
Cost: $113 ~ Class #20129

Improve your game and sharpen your skills. This course is designed for the advanced beginner. Learn more effective “dinking”, volleying, and the 3rd shot drop. You must have taken “Learn to Play” before enrolling in this class.  To register, click here.

Senior Connections & Resources
Wednesday, October 19, 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Location: Room C

This month learn about medical program options and common acronyms used in a hospital setting.  The Senior Connections Case Manager will facilitate, provide resources, referrals, and practical and constructive information to assist with working through life’s tough and complex issues. Program provided by Alameda Family Services and funded in part by the Mastick Senior Center Advisory Board. Registration not required. If you have questions, call 510-747-7505.

Holocaust and Resistance  
Thursday, October 20, 10:00 a.m., Location: Dining Room 2

Join a Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) Educator on a journey through past and current exhibitions, exploring the life stories of artists before and during World War II, and their determination to resist the Nazi regime, and survive.

In this virtual tour, we will share the stories of the photographer Roman Vishniac, artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, and the remarkable story of puppeteers, Mike and Farnces Oznowicz from our 2022 exhibition Oz is for Oznowicz: A Puppet Family's History.

We hope that by sharing these stories and bringing to light examples of artistic resistance connected to the Holocaust, we encourage conversation and contemplation, and further Holocaust education and lessons in fighting antisemitism, hate, and authoritarianism today.  No registration required.

Alexander Technique: The Art of Breathing Well

We will start serving ice cream at 11:30 a.m.  Then, join us at 12:00 p.m. in the Social Hall for a performance by the Air Force Band of the Golden West!  Registration and payment for your ice cream sundae is due by Monday, October 24, in the lobby.

Halloween Parade and Treats for Children!

Location: Mastick Courtyard near Dining Room 1

Enjoy the Holiday by watching the children from ABC Preschool parade around in their Halloween costumes. Then, hand out treats to the kids (treats provided by Mastick). Mastick Members are welcome to bring their grandchildren to participate in the parade and treats once it reaches our Center. No registration required.  Those bringing children should arrive at 11:40 a.m.

Halloween Dance

Dress for the holiday and join Line Dance Instructor Extraordinaire, Susie, as she leads a variety of dances. Rob Schmidt is our guest volunteer Dee Jay. Light refreshments provided. Come join the fun! 

Book Signing Meet and Greet

Fitness with Kendra
Tuesdays, November 1 - 22, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Location: Social Hall
Cost: $39 ~ Class #20031

Full body workout that includes stretching, low impact cardio, strength and balance training with light weights, and floor/mat core work. All moves can be modified for all fitness levels, are completed at your own pace and are set to fun music. Mats and weights provided. To register, click here.

Tikkun: For the Cosmos, the Community, and Ourselves  
Thursday, November 17, 10:00 a.m., Location: Room D

This exhibition is the latest iteration of the Dorothy Saxe Invitational, a recurring showcase in which artists from a variety of backgrounds are invited to contribute a work of art that explores a particular Jewish ritual object or concept.

This year’s participating artists reflect on the Jewish concept of TIKKUN, Hebrew for “to repair,” as a phenomenon of care and interconnectedness that is grounded in personal action, environmental responsibility, and community practice.

A CJM Educator will facilitate this tour, highlight select pieces in the exhibition, and engage your group in discussion. To learn more about the exhibition visit The CJM  website.  No registration required.

Coffee in the Courtyard
Enjoy a cup of coffee from our outdoor 'self serve' Coffee and Water Station in the Courtyard.  We encourage you to bring your own cups/mugs to reduce waste. 

Mastick Thrift Shop

The Mastick Thrift Shop is open Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Donations are accepted on Thursdays and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or until FULL.  Please bring donations on Thursdays and Saturdays ONLY.

Mastick Program Guidelines

We are excited to see you and want to ensure your visit to the Center is a success.  In an effort to maintain the safety and well-being of members and staff, please adhere to the following when visiting: 

Face-coverings and physical distancing remain in place and are strongly recommended when inside the building;

Stay home if showing signs of respiratory illness (cough, sore throat or shortness of breath) or experiencing signs of COVID-19;

Enter through the breezeway as individual exterior classroom doors (parking lot/Bay Street) remain locked at this time.  Enter classrooms via interior classroom doors (courtyard);

Wall-mounted hand-sanitizing stations are available in each room;

Food and beverage consumption is not permitted indoors at this time (exception water bottle). Consider eating before/after visiting the Center; and

Be sure to dress in layers, bring a hat, sunscreen, and anything necessary to provide for your own comfort.
