Mayor’s Update On The Proposed Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company Ordinance - December 6, 2022

Government and Politics

December 8, 2022

From: Cranbury Township

Dear Cranbury Residents,

I am pleased to announce that we have worked together with the leadership of the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company to endorse amendments to proposed Ordinance 11-22-10 at the December 12th Township Committee meeting.

The proposed Ordinance was introduced to close a gap identified this year: the Cranbury Township Code does not currently include any reference to the relationship between the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company and the Township. In partnership with the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company leadership, the amended ordinance summarizes and clarifies the current roles and responsibilities, funding, and financial operation of the Fire Company. It does not de-fund the fire company, nor does it take any control away from the Fire Company to serve as the sole provider of fire services to our town.

I have received a statement from Richard Zimmer, President of the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company, agreeing with the amendments to be made to the proposed ordinance, stating that, “The membership and officers of the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company would like to take the time to thank all of the residents of Cranbury Township for their support of the fire company over the past few weeks.  We are happy to announce that once mutual negotiations began between the Township Committee members and the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company on an agreement to the ordinance proposed by the Township Committee, that both sides were able to come to an agreement which satisfies both sides' interests.”

The required process forward includes a reading of the further proposed amendments to the ordinance at the December 12th Township Committee meeting, with a public hearing on those amendments at the December 19th meeting. A final vote for adoption will take place at the December 19th Township Committee meeting.

Finally, I would like to thank the residents for their continued engagement and commitment to Cranbury.

Best Regards,

Mayor Barbara Rogers
