Holiday Craft: Magazine Christmas Tree

Adult program – 18+ Registration required (phone)

Season's greetings! Please join us as we watch The Christmas Story and make a Christmas tree using magazines. We will also be serving holiday refreshments to celebrate the season. Supplies are limited and registration is required. Please call 936-522-2697 to inquire about registering for this event.

Gardening with Bob - A Bountiful and Healthy Spring Garden

Learn the keyboard keys and how to type to increase your speed and accuracy.  Registration required.

December 8th 6:00 PM- Novels at Night Book Club

Adults 18+

Join us every 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. as we meet in person to discuss novels from various genres. Tea and cookies are provided! Come and share your thoughts and ideas while making new friends.  December's pick is Persuasion by Jane Austen.  Registration required.

December 12th 10:00 AM- Baby and Me

Ages 0-18 months

Join us for Baby and Me! Baby and Me is an early literacy event geared toward babies 0-18 months.  It is a great opportunity for babies and their caregivers to have fun and bond over rhymes, songs, stories, music, and movement. See you there!  Registration Required.

December 13th 5:00 PM- Needlecraft a Good Yarn

Adults 18+

Calling all needlecrafters! Get together with other crafters to socialize while you work on your projects. Open to anyone who knits, crochets, embroiders, or does other needlecrafts.
Bring your projects, share ideas, ask questions. Take advantage of a time to come together with others who share your interest. Registration required.

Ages 0-6

Join us for Central Family Storytime!  Storytime is an early literacy event geared toward children ages 6 and younger.  It is a great opportunity for children to practice their listening and participation skills and to bond with their caregivers over great stories, catchy tunes, and fun activities. We can't wait to see you!

Ages 3-6

Join Ms. AJ for Central "Busy Hands" Preschool Craft Program! This preschool art program is for children ages 3 - 6 years old, only. Children will learn a few facts about well-known artists, and then create their own artwork based on the style of the 'Artist of the Month'! Spaces are limited, and supplies will be provided.  An adult caregiver must be in attendance during the program.  Registration required.

December 20th 3:45 PM- Read to the Dogs

Children ages 5-12.

Join us for 'Read to the Dogs' at Central Library! 'Read to the Dogs' is a literacy program in partnership with Pets With a Mission, Inc.  This program is designed for children ages 5-12 years old. Readers will select a short book of their choice and will spend 5-10 minutes reading to a trained dog with their owner/handler in attendance. Parents must remain available in the Children's Department while their child is reading.

December 28th 6:00 PM- Teen Board Game Café

Teens ages 13-17.

Join us in the small meeting room for a night of board games, puzzles, and more! Snacks and drinks will be provided.  Registration required.

Pre-readers and readers may practice reading with therapy dogs from PETS WITH A MISSION (PWAM). Dogs listen! Recommended for children, ages 4-12. Registration is required due to limited space and opens one week prior to the event.  Please register every person in your group. Sorry, no walk-ins. As a courtesy to others, please unregister if you can no longer attend.

First Monday, December 5th at 1:00pm – Writers’ Group - Adults

Meet every First Monday of the month from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.  Supportive writers’ group – no dues or education/experience required.

Thursday, December 8th at 4pm – Tabletop Gaming

Put your game face on and be ready to have fun! Multiple games to choose from. Snacks will be provided. 
Tuesday, December 13th at 4:00 pm – Harry Potter Legos

As a special holiday treat, we are having a make-and-take Harry Potter Lego activity with kits portraying Hogwarts classrooms that fold up into a book. Those who register before December 5th will be able to claim their preferred kit from the following options: Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, and Divination. Space will be extremely limited, so Teens (age 13-17) will receive priority access. Please include age and kit selection (under Special Needs) during registration.

Not all holiday traditions make sense... so participate in an extra quirky one by watching Big Trouble in Little China (PG-13) with us. Snacks will be provided.

Thursday, December 8th at 10:00am and 11:00am – Storytime with Santa – Ages 5 and younger
Santa will visit the Mitchell Library for a special storytime at 10am and 11am.  Entrance is first-come, first-serve until the room or program is at capacity.  Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Thursday, December 13th from 4:00pm-6:00pm – Holiday Open House – All Ages
Come join us at the Mitchell Library as we celebrate the holiday season with a special Open House complete with refreshments, crafts, live music, and a special appearance by Santa!

Monthly Events at the Library

Thursday, December 1st at 1:00pm – Adult Fiction Book Club/Nonfiction Book Club Holiday Meeting

The Fiction and Nonfiction Book Clubs will come together to discuss two books set in Mexico in the mid-to-late 1800s.  Enjoy good food and camaraderie in this holiday get-together while participating in a shared discussion of two books that have similar settings and historical backgrounds.  For adults 18+, registration is required. 

The Fiction Book Club will discuss Luis Alberto Urrea’s The Hummingbird’s Daughter, an epic mystical drama about a young woman’s sudden sainthood.

The Nonfiction Book Club will discuss The Last Emperor of Mexico: The Dramatic Story of the Habsburg Archduke Who Created a Kingdom in the New World, the spectacular story of European hubris, of imperialist aspirations clashing with revolutionary fervor, and of the Old World breaking from the New.

Monday, December 5th from 5:30pm-7:00pm– Teen Escape from the Grand Hotel: An Escape Room Game– Teens 13-17

Register and join other teens attempting to break out of the Grand Hotel.  Fun times and snacks provided!  Ages 13-17, registration required.

Wednesday, December 7th from 10:00am-11:30am – Needlecrafts: Knit & Stitch

Calling all Needlecrafters!  Come by the Mitchell Library Large Meeting Room to socialize while you work on your craft projects.  Open to anyone who knits, crochets, embroiders, or does any other needlecraft.  Bring your own work-in-progress and supplies. 

Monday, December 12th from 5:30pm-7:00pm– Teen Craft Lightning Jars– Teens 13-17

Teens 13-17 will create Lightning Jars using fairy lights and other supplies.  Pretty for the holiday season.  Registration required.  All supplies and snacks provided. 

Tuesday, December 13th at 1:30pm – Adult Crafternoons

If you’ve got hundreds of “pins” on Pinterest, but just can’t get started, Crafternoons is for you!  Each month will feature a free craft that adults 18+ can create.  Registration is required.  No advanced skills are needed; crafts are self-directed with instructions provided.  By registering, you are reserving a craft packet for yourself to create while at the meeting.  December’s craft will be a gnome ornament!

Thursday, December 15th at 1:00pm – Adult Movie Matinee

Come see Where the Crawdads Sing (2022).  From the best-selling novel comes the captivating mystery of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina.  In her young adulthood, the “Marsh Girl” is drawn to two young men from town.  When one of them is found dead, she is cast by the community as a suspect; however, as the case unfolds, the facts become increasingly unclear and the secrets of the marsh may reveal long-hidden secrets.  We invite you to join other adults 18+ for popcorn, a drink, and a movie in Large Meeting Room 102.  Registration is required.

Monday, December 19th from 1:00pm-6:00pm– Teen Movie Marathon– Teens 13-17

Join us for this TEENS ONLY Fantastic Beasts Movie Marathon!  These movies are rated PG-13 and will be located in the downstairs Large Meeting Room 102.  Teens 13-17, registration required.  Popcorn, candy, and pizza will be served!

Weekly Events at the Library

Mondays from 10:00am-11:00am - Tiny Tots Library Play Time – Ages 3 and younger

A Family Place Library weekly event.  This come-and-go program at the Mitchell Library encourages play with educational toys and activities that target early literacy.  Spend time together, play in a playgroup atmosphere, make friends, and visit with other parents.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00am & 11:00am - Family Storytime – Ages 5 and younger

Join us at Mitchell Library for a morning of stories.  This story program is geared for children five and younger and a caregiver and emphasizes stories and activities for toddlers. It is also a great way to meet other families in the area with young children.
