This Saturday, the MET OPERA LIVE: FEDORA --Umberto Giordano’s exhilarating drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melody, show stopping arias, and explosive confrontations, Fedora requires a cast of thrilling voices to take flight, and the Met’s new production promises to deliver. Director David McVicar delivers a detailed and dramatic staging based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a Russian nesting doll, unfolds to reveal the opera’s three distinctive settings—a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.
Take a journey with EO, a gray donkey with melancholic eyes and a curious spirit. Beginning his life as a circus performer before escaping on a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside marked by absurdity and warmth in equal measure. Legendary filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski directs one of his most free and visually inventive films yet, placing the viewer directly in the heart and mind of the four-legged protagonist. Loosely inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, and featuring immersive, stunning cinematography by Michal Dymek coupled with Pawel Mykietyn’s resonant score, Skolimowski’s film puts the viewer in the perspective of its four-legged protagonist.
RETROGRADE, and after film discussion with Oscar nominee and part-time islander Matthew Heineman. RETROGRADE captures the final nine months of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan from multiple perspectives: one of the last U.S. Special Forces units deployed there, a young Afghan general and his corps fighting to defend their homeland against all odds, and the civilians desperately attempting to flee as the country collapses and the Taliban take over. Matthew Heineman’s latest film offers a cinematic and historic window onto the end of America’s longest war.

While Elizabeth's role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her more and more restless in Vienna. With a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out in front of her, Elizabeth rebels against the hyperbolized image of herself and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy. Recently selected for the Oscar® shortlist in the Best International Feature category for the 95th Academy Awards, and world premiered at Cannes, where star Vicky Krieps won the Un Certain Regard Best Performance Prize.

THE FABELMANS is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written and produced by Tony Kushner and Spielberg. It is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker himself who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles.

Theatre Operations Coordinator
Theatre Coordinator is responsible for the daily/year-round operation of the film center/cinema and coordination of part-time and volunteer staff (when needed in summer) to operate the center efficiently (show management, concessions, maintenance, etc). The Theatre Operations Coordinator must ensure the successful execution of all film and non-film events on time collaborating with several colleagues. Work schedule is afternoon-nights, weekends, and some holidays: typical off-season schedule (September to June) is daily Wednesday, to Sunday 3-10 pm with occasional 1 pm matinees on weekend. In summer it’s 6-10 pm, 5-6 nights a week (we're open every night). Some deviations to this schedule occurs during the year.

With his first film in seven years, legendary director Jerzy Skolimowski (Deep End, Moonlighting) directs one of his most free and visually inventive films yet, following the travels of a nomadic gray donkey named EO. After being removed from the traveling circus, which is the only life he’s ever known, EO begins a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside, experiencing cruelty and kindness in equal measure, all the while observing the follies and triumphs of humankind. During his travels, EO is both helped and hindered by a cast of characters including a young Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo), a Countess (Isabelle Huppert), and a rowdy Polish soccer team. Loosely inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, and featuring immersive, stunning cinematography by Michal Dymek coupled with Pawel Mykietyn’s resonant score, Skolimowski’s film puts the viewer in the perspective of its four-legged protagonist. EO’s journey speaks to the world around us, an equine hero boldly pointing out societal ills, and serving as warning to the dangers of neglect and inaction, all while on a quest for freedom.

But, soon he discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.

RECIENT EVENTS AT THE FILM CENTER
A recent morning student screening in collaboration with the MV Regional High School's AP Classes in African American Studies and its Black Student Alliance. We thank Nell Coogan, Restorative Coordinator/Teacher, for coordinating with the #MVFILMCENTER. Students discussion with teachers followed the screening of EMANCIPATION, which was produced by Jon Mone, a former MVRHS student himself.
All we can say is BRAVO! Sunday, the Film Center hosted a benefit for the Vineyard Haven Public Library in collaboration with the Peter H Luce Play-readers. The marvelous Director and Producer Linda Comstock brought this performance of I AND YOU to fruition with actors John Brannen and Jacqueline Stallings. The benefit included a moving performance by Brannen and Stallings; filmed comments before the play-reading from library supporters Al Franken, Livingston Taylor, Geraldine Brooks, Rose Styron and Arch Smith; a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses; and a wine reception afterward in our lobby courtesy of Our Market.
