Live Concerts Return to the Library!

Solo Piano Performance with Stephen Porter: Sunday, October 16 at 2pm. Join Stephen Porter for a solo piano performance that will include: 

Janacek  "In the Mists"

Beethoven  Sonata no. 30 in E major, Op. 109

Sonata no. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110

SuperTALL: How the World's Tallest Buildings Are Reshaping Our Cities and Our Lives: Tuesday, October 4 at 7pm. In his new book, SuperTALL, architect and TED-Resident Stefan Al, describes how the most remarkable skyscrapers have been designed and built. 

Find Happiness through Mindfulness, Meditation and Yoga: Thursday, October 6 at 7:15pm. Experience ancient practices of breathing and meditation in an informal virtual setting. No previous experience required. 

Author Talk with Gish Jen on Thank You Mr. Nixon: Thursday, October 6 at 7pm Join Gish Jen, for a talk on her collection of short stories. Thank You Mr. Nixon takes measure of the fifty years since the opening of China and its unexpected effects on the lives of ordinary people. 

The Challenge of Democratic Legitimacy in Turbulent Times: Friday, October 7 at 10am. Rachael V. Cobb, Ph.D., will talk about the root causes that drove claims of voter fraud in the last presidential election. While these issues have plagued us historically, and especially in the last few years, in this session we will learn about their impact on our trust in the system and the effect it has on our democracy.

Opening Reception for Cloudscapes of Bullough’s Pond by Ellen Foust, Tuesday, October 11 at 7pm. Ellen Foust’s bold, graphical compositions explore the interaction of light and clouds on Bullough's Pond in Newton, MA. The show will be on view October 4-30 in the Main Hall.

Join celebrity host, Jimmy Tingle, for a lively session designed for those who care about the environment and want guidance on how to make greener choices in their lives and homes. Liora Silkes, Newton’s Energy Coach, and Waneta Trabert, Newton’s Sustainable Materials Management Director, will fill you in on exciting developments in recycling and, among other things, Newton's home energy campaign, 4 Our Future

Art Shows on View October 4 - 30

Light Reflections by Dan Dyer, Gallery: The show includes several series that reflect Dyer’s interest in capturing the character of light. Shadow Studies explore the beauty of tree shadows in a variety of lighting conditions. Gray Light Studies, captures the many shades of gray present in low lighting conditions. Sepia Series, reflects Dan’s observations of people interacting with the landscape through sepia-toned value studies. And finally, there are several local landmarks observed in the warm glow of a winter evening. Contact: [email protected]

Cloudscapes of Bullough’s Pond by Ellen Foust, Main Hall: Ellen Foust is an artist and photographer with a passion for teaching. Her bold, graphical compositions explore the interaction of light and clouds on Bullough's Pond in Newton, MA. She teaches iPhone photography at the Brandeis Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (BOLLI) and at the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society (LexArt).
