Spotlight on Julia and Rachel’s Favorite Books of 2022!
Tween Reads
Other Ever Afters by Melanie Gillman - Fractured queer fairytales take center stage in this graphic novel ranging from giants to magical forests! Julia loved the illustrations and the emotional impact of the fairytales!
The Stars Did Wander Darkling by Colin Meloy - Archie Coombs is convinced that an unknown evil is wreaking havoc on his seaside Oregon town after his dad’s construction company works on what is widely believed to be a haunted house. Adults in town begin to act strangely, and Archie is determined to get to the bottom of it! Julia thought this book was a great combo of Stranger Things and Stephen King!
The Many Meanings of Meilan by Andrea Wang - After moving from Boston’s Chinatown to rural Ohio, seventh-grader Melian must adjust to her new surroundings and make a place for herself by tapping into her sense of justice and developing her own identity. Julia related to certain aspects of the book and rooted for Melian as she navigated difficult situations.
Teen Reads
Hollow Fires by Samira Ahmed - Safiya Mirza investigates the murder of a 14-year-old boy who was unjustly arrested and labeled a terrorist. Safiya seeks to find the whole truth about the boy and the folks that killed him. Rachel enjoyed the mystery and the dual points of view that kept the pages turning!
This May End Badly by Samantha Markum - Doe Saltpeter is attempting to out-prank the neighboring boys’ school. Instead of continuing to prank each other, Doe and the boys join forces to protect another student from a teacher’s inappropriate behavior. Rachel loved the whip smart dialogue and the friendships as well as the boarding school setting and enemies-to-lovers trope.
A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft - Competing for glory in a magical fox funt, Margaret Welty and apprentice Weston Winters form an unexpected team to prove themselves to others and win money for their futures. Rachel thought the world building was different, the romance was sunshine boy and grumpy girl trope and the writing was lovely.
