Message from the President
Dear Parent,
Homecoming is a bit later in the semester this year, allowing us to enjoy the full beauty of fall in the high country and even the early hints of winter, with cooler temperatures and the occasional dusting of snow on the San Francisco Peaks. Homecoming also means we are already well past the halfway mark of the semester, and staying engaged is the key to success.
One way to do so and enjoy the full richness of NAU’s traditions, spend time with your student, and have fun with the entire Lumberjack community is to join in on all the events planned for NAU Homecoming. This fall tradition includes a bonfire, carnival rides, flapjacks (AKA pancakes), parades, alumni recognitions events, and, of course, football!
Alumni will find their way back home and our students will experience the best of Lumberjack life. This issue of Backpack includes the full schedule if you’d like to join us.
This is the home stretch in the fall semester for our students, and I want to assure you that you and your student are part of a caring community. I continue to admire the fact that NAU offers a great educational experience and Flagstaff and the nature around us represents a great laboratory for learning. It is gratifying to me that your students have entrusted us with their educational journey, and that they have an entire community here for them, supporting them, and cheering them on every step of the way.
With warm regards,
José Luis

“Parents of College Students” support group
Transitioning to college can be difficult, especially for parents of a young person who is struggling. NAU Counseling Services is here to support you as a parent by offering a “Parents of College Students” support group. If you are interested in joining, please reach out to Christopher Margeson at
[email protected] or call Counseling Services at 928-523-2261.
Parents of College Students Support Group: Bringing parents together to help each other navigate this transitional period in our lives. We will cover topics related to supporting your NAU college kid, the empty nest phenomenon, exploring resources at NAU and in the community, changes in communication with your child, and other general topics that may arise. This group meets bi-weekly via Zoom with a casual atmosphere of support and a goal of determining the next developmental steps for all of us.
We are here to help. Parents, please remember to take care of yourselves too!
Peace Corps Prep Certificate at NAU!
All NAU undergraduate students are welcome to take part in this cost-free program. By joining the program, students will be notified of Peace Corps events, connected to the AZ Peace Corps recruiter, and receive mentorship from Returned Peace Corps volunteers!
To successfully complete this program and earn a Peace Corps Prep Certificate, students must build four core competencies through interrelated coursework, hands-on volunteer or work experience, and professional development support. Courses already required for a student’s degree can be used for certificate requirements.
Studying abroad can be used as well! Your Lumberjack can spend a summer studying Spanish in Costa Rica or a semester studying Egyptology in Cairo, all while earning a certificate.
Students are not required to apply for the Peace Corps once they complete the program, but it will undoubtedly make them highly competitive Peace Corps applicants in an already competitive process. In addition to buffing up a Peace Corps application, this certificate will look great on a resume or graduate school application.
NAU’s winter term can help your student stay supported, engaged, and on track
We recommend that your student complete 30 credits per academic year to graduate on time. This winter term, they can take advantage of valuable opportunities to catch up or get ahead
We’re committed to helping your Lumberjack stay connected while studying online. We offer a variety of virtual and in-person healthcare appointments, mental health resources, wellness programs, and counseling sessions. Explore our
Campus Health Services webpage to learn more, and check out our programs and facilities that will help your student stay physically active during winter session.
Although scholarship funds do not cover winter term, your student
may qualify to defer charges until spring based on their financial aid award
Winter courses begin December 19. It’s time to create a unique experience!
