Parent-to-Parent: Homesickness
Dear Parent,
For a parent, there is nothing quite like the helplessness we experience when our children miss home. If your student is experiencing homesickness, here are some tips that may help:
Be sympathetic: Assure your Lumberjack that homesickness is normal and will pass in time.
Listen: One of the best ways to help your Lumberjack is to simply listen and support them.
Encourage involvement: This may be the last thing a homesick student wants to hear, but student involvement can sometimes help to overcome those feelings. By connecting with other students on campus, they are creating a support system at NAU.
Hide your own emotions: It’s okay to let your student know that they are missed; however, try to keep it positive.
Send some love: Sending care packages or letters from family can provide some comfort from home for your student.
Know when homesickness becomes something else: If you suspect your student is experiencing depression, discuss your concern with them and look into the services offered by the NAU CARE Center and Counseling Services.
Sincerely,
Shannon Clark

Family Weekend reminder
It’s finally here: Family Weekend is this weekend, October 7-9! We are so excited to welcome all our Lumberjack families to NAU. Here are some friendly reminders for the weekend:
Explore the Family Weekend website to see a complete list of events.
Print your parking pass ahead of time. Parking passes can be downloaded from the Family Weekend website.
Buy tickets for events you wish to attend prior to the weekend. Football tickets often sell out fast!
NAU's clear bag policy will be in effect for football games.
See you soon and GO JACKS!

Midterms are coming. Here's how you can help!
Encourage your student to try academic resources, even if they think they don’t need them. Tutoring can help students get an A instead of a B.
Inform students of the resources available to them.
Discuss how asking for help when you need it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Over 50% of NAU students use services from the Academic Success Centers (ASC) each year!
Ask questions about their academic experience, such as:
Where is your favorite place to study?
Do you ever have a hard time attending class?
Have you utilized your professors’ office hours?
What academic resources are available and have you used them?
What goals do you have for the semester?

Remember that faculty, staff, and peer students are invested in your student’s success and willing to help. Please do not hesitate to contact the Academic Success Centers for more information.

Education Abroad Scholarship Opportunities
Is your Lumberjack interested in studying, interning, or researching abroad? NAU Education Abroad has over 500 programs in 70 countries, and we are here to help your student find the right program for them!
In addition to our programs being very affordable for students, Education Abroad has a variety of scholarships available for students who are pursuing international experiences. One of EA’s biggest scholarships is the ASNAU Global Opportunities Scholarship, which is available to all Flagstaff campus students studying abroad. This award offers up to $1,000 to students who are undertaking study abroad programs in the semester, summer, or academic year, as well as programs over winter break or spring break.
We also work with a specialty scholarship called the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award is available exclusively to students who receive the Pell Grant as part of their FAFSA financial aid package. The Gilman Scholarship offers up to $5,000 to students studying abroad in any country.
All students who study abroad are encouraged to apply for scholarships to help fund their international experiences. Students interested in studying abroad can meet with an Education Abroad Advisor to help plan their adventure. Tell your Lumberjack to come see us today!
