A Thousand and One

Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm | Wednesday, May 17 at 7 pm | Thursday, May 18 at 4 pm and 7 pm

This year, the Sundance Film Festival awarded its Grand Jury Prize to A Thousand and One, written and directed by the second-only black woman to win. A. V. Rockwell was praised for her filmmaking and for diving into the poverty and unjust society not seen since Omar walked the streets of Baltimore in The Wire. Singer Teyana Taylor slays in her first starring role as a young woman released from Rikers who wants to start over as a beautician. When she sees a 6-year-old boy wandering the streets, she recognizes him as Terry, the child she was forced to give up.

POLITE SOCIETY

Thursday, May 19 - Friday, May 25

(Special Wednesday, May 24, 1 pm Screening)

The first film written and directed by Nida Manzoor is part Bollywood, part British comedy, part action movie and part feminist fable. Above all, it is a celebration of young British-Pakistani women making their way in London, following their dreams in spite of the expectations of an older generation. Priya Kansara stars as teenager Ria, whose ambition of being a stuntwoman like her hero (real-life martial arts/stunt double Eunice Huthart) is cheered on by her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and best friends, if not her more traditional family and teachers. But when Ria suspects that Lena has been tricked into an engagement with a charming & “crazy rich” geneticist, her spirit, determination and kickass moves may just yet save the day. Not unlike Everything Everywhere All at Once, Polite Society is hard to categorize…but even harder to forget. “Come for the action and loving send-up of martial arts films, and stay for the sisterly support that shines through.” – Alejandra Martinez, Austin Chronicle.

SHREK

One Day Only

Friday, May 19 at 7:30 pm

Once upon a time, in a faraway swamp, there lived an ornery ogre named Shrek (Myers) whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy-tale characters. There are blind mice in his food, a big, bad wolf in his bed, three little homeless pigs and more, all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (Lithgow). Determined to save their home – not to mention his own – Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona (Diaz) to be Farquaad’s bride. Accompanying him on his mission is a wisecracking donkey (Murphy), who will do anything for Shrek... except shut up. Rescuing the princess from a fire-breathing dragon may prove the least of their problems when the deep, dark secret she has been keeping is revealed.
