PRAIRIE GROVE, Ark. – Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park will host interpretive programs each week throughout September.

Fridays, September 1, 15, 22, 29
1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Nature Journaling, Hindman Hall
Soldiers’ written observations and drawings provide historians with first-hand descriptions of what the landscape, people and community looked like in 1862. Today, we’ll use our senses to describe and record observations in the park. No skill or experience is necessary.

Friday, September 1
3 p.m. – 4 p.m., Battlefield Tour, Borden Picnic Area
Lives were forever changed here on Dec. 7, 1862. Join us for a 1-mile walk along the ridgeline where the heaviest fighting occurred during the Civil War Battle of Prairie Grove.

6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., Freedom Codes, Borden Picnic Area
Can you crack the code? Songs, signals, and a road to freedom were all coded by railroad language. Visitors will be introduced to the Underground Railroad and the many ways that enslaved people communicated along their journey to freedom.

Saturday, September 2 through Monday, September 4
8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Clothesline Fair, Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park
The annual Clothesline Fair will take place over Labor Day weekend and features vendors selling and demonstrating handmade crafts, and local children competing in a square dancing competition. Non-profit organizations operate food and drink concessions. Parking is $5.

Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3
5 p.m. – 6 p.m., 1800s Homestead Tour, Latta House
Learn how to live in a historic homestead in the 1800s

Saturday, September 2
11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., Infantry Drill, Battle Monument
Answer the call to arms! Many men and boys did this in the 1860s. Follow in their footsteps and learn infantry maneuvers using wooden rifles.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Pioneer Games, Hindman Hall
Stilts, Sack Races, and Hoops and Graces are just part of the fun waiting for you at Pioneer Games! Join the park interpreter to get in touch with your inner pioneer.
