MacArthur Genius Grantees

On Tuesday the MacArthur Foundation announced its annual MacArthur Fellowship grantees.

We're so pleased for Tomeka, Paul, and Kiese, each of whom we've worked with. They add to the remarkable number of MacArthur "geniuses" that Real Art Ways has presented - now a total of 43!

Tomeka Reid

Tomeka Reid is a jazz cellist, composer, and improviser. Tomeka has performed at Real Art Ways multiple times, most recently in May of 2022 as part of Real Art Ways' ImprovisationsNow series.

Paul Chan

Paul Chan is an interdisciplinary artist who makes drawings, sculptures, and digital projections; writes essays on culture and history; ran a publishing enterprise; and staged a play. His video work animating the work of outsider artist Henry Darger was in Real Art Ways' exhibition Lean Too in 2003.

Kiese Laymon

Kiese Laymon is a writer bearing witness to the myriad forms of violence that mark the Black experience. Kiese, the author of Heavy and other books, brilliantly discussed Felandus Thames' work in Real Art Ways' main gallery during an online presentation in 2021.

Terry Jenoure & The Portal
Sunday, 10/30 2:30

Terry Jenoure is a composer, violinist & vocalist. Over the past ten years, Jenoure's performances have had a fascinating memoir focus. Her new composition for Real Art Ways merges story with innovation.

Jenoure has assembled a sextet of longtime collaborators including Angelica Sanchez (piano), Wayne Smith (cello), Avery Sharpe (bass), Joe Fonda (bass), and Reggie Nicholson (drums) for this performance.

This event was made possible with funding by the New England Foundation for the Arts' New Work New England program, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Rescue Plan, Seedlings Foundation, the Fund for the Arts at NEFA and individual donors. This grant is in honor of Dr. Larry Simpson, a NEFA board member from 2006-2020, including six years as chair, and a champion of the arts.
