Live music from La Banda Chuska:

La Banda Chuska: Taking inspiration from the twangy 1960s surf bands of Lima (Los Belkings, Los Siderals) as well as the psychedelic flavors of 1970s chicha (Los Destellos, Los Orientales de Paramonga), their post-punk energy and subversive playfulness have also evoked comparisons to a tropical version of the B-52s. Expect a rhythmic, and high energy performance with a psychedelic flare.

The band will perform music from their debut self-titled EP recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Jennifer Homans is the dance critic for The New Yorker and the bestselling author of Mr. B: George Balanchine’s 20th Century (2022) and Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet (2010). Homans was a professional dancer and performed with the Pacific Northwest Ballet before earning a BA at Columbia University and a PhD in Modern European History at New York University, where she is now a Distinguished Scholar in Residence and the Founding Director of the Center for Ballet and the Arts.

Science on Screen: The Botany of Desire

Presentation at 6:30 with organismal biologist Dr. Nikisha Patel, Trinity College, followed by a film screening at 7pm.

Based on Michael Pollan's best-seller, this film presents the history of four plants, each of which found a way to make itself essential to humans. Apples, for sweetness; tulips, for beauty; marijuana, for pleasure; and potatoes, for sustenance. Each has a story of discovery and adaptation; each has a symbiotic relationship with human civilization.

Meet the man behind the bananas! Howard el-Yasin is is a New Haven, CT-based interdisciplinary artist, curator and educator. He will join with Sarah Fritchey to discuss his artistic practice.

Sarah Fritchey is an independent curator and writer who works at the intersections of art, justice, civic engagement, memory and belonging. Her projects seek to bring different forms of exhibition making into a shared space, and link object study to storytelling, local history, site, and direct action. She curated the memorable exhibition Statues Also Die at Real Art Ways in the Fall of 2020
