Drawing its musical influences from American roots music — swing, boogie-woogie, and Motown, Eight to the Bar is known for its outstanding instrumentalists and vocal arrangements

Join the RIHS and Green Line Apothecary tomorrow (Saturday, June 25) at Green Line Apothecary in Providence at 1pm for our next Drink in the History program.

Program guests will enjoy both Green Line's house-made ice cream and a classic egg cream soda fountain beverage. Ken Procaccianti, co-founder and chief operating officer of Green Line Apothecary, will also share the rich history of drugstore soda fountains, including his own experience restoring the authentic 80-year-old equipment used to make the classic beverages in their stores.

Tickets are $25 for RIHS members and $30 for nonmembers, and can be purchased at rihs.org.

The Gaspee Legacy: Resistance or Treason?

Open through 2022 at the

John Brown House Museum

Our new exhibition commemorates the 250th anniversary of the burning of the British Navy schooner Gaspee by a group of disaffected Rhode Islanders in the early morning hours of June 10, 1772. On display are a series of panels telling the tale and over a dozen original objects and documents related to this iconic event in Rhode Island's past--like John Brown's cane made of wood taken from the Gaspee, the 1772 issue of the Newport Mercury bearing one of the first newspaper accounts, and the royal proclamation issued by King George III offering a reward for the perpetrators.
