Part 1 of a series of morning lecture recitals that map the personal journeys of musicians with the music of Bach. Hosted by acclaimed pianist and artistic advisor to Tippet Rise Art Center, Pedja Muzijevic and renowned musicologist, and chair of the Historical Performance Department at Longy School of Music of Bard College, John McKean, our series this year begins with two days of Bach’s music for string instruments. Part 1 features iconic unaccompanied Cello Suites played by Sphinx Competition and multi-award-winning Brazilian-American cellist, Gabriel Martins.

We’re delighted to open our Camden Village Green program this year with a free lunchtime performance by the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble featuring faculty and students from Bay Chamber Music School; Jim Ostergaard on bass, Dave Austin on piano, Neal Yetman on guitar, Hank Lunn on drums, and Mike Whitehead on trumpet.
Also appearing in this lunchtime concert, the award-winning string duo ARKAI – violinist Jonathan Miron and cellist Philip Sheegog fuse classical virtuosity with the electricity of a rock band and the spontaneity of a jazz combo.
Bring a picnic and join us for a cool lunchtime respite.

Parrt 2 of a series of morning lecture recitals that map the personal journeys of musicians with the music of Bach. The second session continues our journey through Bach’s music for string instruments with an exploration of his masterful Partita No. 2 played by violinist Geneva Lewis, recently named one of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists. Cellist Gabriel Martins’ deep, joyful, charismatic artistry is again on display in Bach’s Gamba Sonata No. 3, and he is joined by performer and scholar of historical performance practice, harpsichordist, John McKean.

Calidore String Quartet has been praised by The New York Times for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct.” The Los Angeles Times described the quartet as “astonishing,” their playing “shockingly deep,” with “the kind of sublimity other quartets spend a lifetime searching”. The Washington Post has said that “Four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one.” This remarkable ensemble are joined by pianist Pedja Mujijevic for their luscious early evening program.

ARKAI is an award-winning string duo that redefines genre boundaries — fusing classical virtuosity with the electricity of a rock band, the spontaneity of a jazz combo, and the beauty of a string quartet. Their past engagements have included performances at The MET, Lincoln Center, Public Theater, and Carnegie Hall. Committed to social impact through music, ARKAI was commissioned by the Museum of Chinese in America to write a piece for the Responses: Asian Americans Resisting the Tides of Racism exhibition. Their electronic debut composition, Letters from COVID, was featured at TEDPMI, attracting a global audience from 182 countries. ARKAI is currently creating its debut album, Aurora, in collaboration with seven-time Grammy-nominated producer Joel Hamilton.

Part 3 of a series of morning lecture recitals that map the personal journeys of musicians with the music of Bach. Our third session focuses on domestic music of the 18th century and the musical tastes of the Bach Family. Hosted by the erudite pianist, Pedja Muzijevic, the session explores arias from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach sung by GRAMMY Award winning tenor, Karim Sulayman with harpsichordist John McKean, duets for keyboard, and a keyboard concerto by J.S. Bach’s son, Johann Christian Bach, played by Pedja Muzijevic on piano with members of the Maxwell String Quartet.

Chicago-based Axiom Brass designs concert experiences for audiences that stretch the imagination and expand sensibilities. Their Screen Door concert program pairs newly commissioned and familiar music in a fun and joyful lunchtime concert. As strong advocates for the creation and performance of “living music”, the ensemble actively engages with their audiences to showcase the music of living composers. Axiom has presented concerts all over the world, including the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Gallo Center for the Arts in California, Shenzhen Concert Hall in China, and Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Portugal.

PALAVER STRINGS with special guest – JP JOFRE, bandoneon
The acclaimed Portland-based, musician-led chamber orchestra, returns to Screen Door as ensemble in residence, and will perform a nomadic program of international music featuring a new collaboration with composer and one of the world’s leading bandoneonists, JP Jofre. This intrepid ensemble has distinguished itself for their sense of musical adventure and eagerness to engage with music and collaborators from many different genres and traditions. Argentinian “bandoneon master” (The New York Times) JP Jofre’s music has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, multiple GRAMMY Award winner Paquito D’ Rivera and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra among many others.

Part 4 of a series of morning lecture recitals that map the personal journeys of musicians with the music of Bach. Our fourth session celebrates two larger-scale works by J.S. Bach – an orchestral suite for flute and strings, and a harpsichord concerto. Harpsichordist and musicologist John McKean is joined by guest flutist and Maine-native, Nicholas Southwick, praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and by the Boston Musical Intelligencer for his "admirable ensemble cohesion", as well as our resident string ensemble, Palaver Strings.

Three compelling young artists present a varied and kaleidoscopic program of music for string duo and piano trio. New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis’ performances speak from and to the heart. Lauded for the “remarkable mastery of her instrument” (CVNC), Geneva is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and Musical America’s New Artist of the Month.
Praised for his mesmerizing sound, American-Brazilian cellist, Gabriel Martins is the 2020 Sphinx Competition Gold Medalist. His many high-profile concerts include performances at Wigmore, Carnegie, and Merkin Halls, the Moscow Conservatory Great Hall, and Maison Symphonique in Montréal.
Fresh from his triumphant debut solo recital at Wigmore Hall in London, pianist Conrad Tao has been called an artist of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” (The New York Times). This ferociously talented trio present an eclectic program:

OSHIMA BROTHERS & FRIENDS
SEAN OSHIMA and JAMIE OSHIMA with surprise guest artists
This Maine-based indie duo have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a "roots-based pop sound that is infectious." (NPR). On stage, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals, live looping, foot percussion, electric and acoustic guitars, vintage keyboard and bass - often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath, a dance party and a sonic embrace. For their Screen Door concert, they will collaborate with a range of classical artists and ensembles performing at the festival.
Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and, let’s face it, we need uplifting these days.”

Our final session in this series explores virtuosity, improvisation, and flexibility in Bach’s music with a pianist and composer who is ‘the kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music’ (New York Magazine), Conrad Tao. In addition to two magnificent Bach keyboard masterpieces, Conrad will also reflect on his personal creative responses to Bach as a contemporary performer and composer with a selection of his own transcriptions of Bach’s music.

The culmination of a week of music-making, conversation, community celebration, and travels, our closing gala features performances by artists performing at Screen Door 2022, led by spectacular international vocal talents tenor Karim Sulayman and mezzo soprano, Kate Aldrich.
Lebanese-American tenor Karim Sulayman has garnered international attention as a sophisticated and versatile artist, consistently praised for his sensitive and intelligent musicianship, riveting stage presence, and beautiful voice. The 2019 Best Classical Solo Vocal GRAMMY® Award winner, he continues to earn acclaim for his programming and recording projects, while regularly performing on the world’s stages in opera, orchestral concerts, recital and chamber music.
Hailed by the San Francisco Sentinel as “the Carmen of this generation”, Kate Aldrich is originally from Maine. Franco Zeffirelli chose her for Amneris in his production of Aida, presented on the centenary of Verdi’s death. Since then Kate has appeared in opera houses and concert halls around the world. Several of her performances have been issued on DVD, including Werther opposite Roberto Alagna at the Teatro Regio di Torino.
Also featured in this concert, Axiom Brass Quintet, Maxwell String Quartet, pianists Peipei Song and Manuel Bagorro, and Palaver Strings.
A compelling mixed program of music that marks the end of our summer musical journey together; an expedition that we hope was reviving, intriguing, joyful, and meaningful.
