Wish to experience more than a single art class? Sign up for Bronx Summer Art Focus: a five-week daily program to learn and develop your skills and creativity in Visual Arts, working with professional teaching artists. The program meets every day, allowing students to learn various media and techniques.

Mondays (July 11, 18, 25; August 1, 8)

INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING for Children - 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Jonathan Berry

This class is an introduction to the skills and techniques for working in painting. It will guide students through their preliminary painting experience. Students will learn to work with multiple paint mediums (acrylic and watercolor), and be introduced to the basic concepts of painting: exploring color, form, and composition.

INTERMEDIATE PAINTING for Teens and Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Jonathan Berry

This course will cover foundations of color theory, composition ideas, and canvas layout. Students will refine their technical skills using acrylic and watercolor, as well as other techniques and methods in painting in order to expand their painting vocabulary. This course will culminate in an instructor-led multi-week project aimed at producing a finished painting based on participants interests and themes.

TEEN PROJECT STUDIO +2.0 for Teens and Young Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Julia Pontés

This Summer, selected participants in the program will work collectively to create a new form of mapping representing West Farms and the Bronx River in "3D Interactive Mapping: Expanded Cartography." This program meets Mondays & Wednesdays, and will introduce production practices using photography, family and public archives, geology, and geography to create 3D maps and an art installation.

Tuesdays (July 12, 19, 26; August 2, 9)

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING for Children and Teens - 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Tiffany Miller

Discover the beauty, magic, and power of this artistic discipline in a relaxed, supportive environment. We will draw what we see and imagine, as well as learn how to express our personal visions, ideas, and observations. With a focus on composition, we will practice our craft by sketching the landscape, still life, abstract, and figurative drawings of master artists, contemporary artists, illustrators, and photographers.

MANGA & ANIME ILLUSTRATION for Teens and Young Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Gregory Maldonado

This class focuses on learning about the structures of manga/anime characters using shapes and anatomy for movement. Students will focus on the creation of Chibi Style caricatures, develop pacing, setting up scenes using panels, working with depth, and the use of lighting and shadow techniques. Students will work on developing their own manga and anime characters to tell their own stories.

Wednesdays (July 13, 20, 27; August 3, 10)

3D MIXED MEDIA for Children and Teens - 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Jennifer Tomaiolo

Bring your imagination to construct creations out of exciting materials in this summer art class! This class will teach you how to use a variety of art materials and methods to create unique 3D mixed media works of art. We will look at art & artists from all over the world to inspire our creativity and learn a new skill each week. Projects will explore a variety of three-dimensional media – using paper, wood, and non-traditional materials to make landscapes, figures, masks and other 3D projects!

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION for Teens and Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Maria Ferrari

Arm yourself with the best tools possible for creating art digitally using Adobe Photoshop. This class teaches basic skills and good work habits that are essential to mastering Photoshop, and its complex range of possibilities - skills that will better prepare students for a lifetime of creating digital art with ease.

Can be attended in-person and virtually. Access to Adobe Photoshop is required for this class.

Thursdays (July 14, 21, 28; August 4, 11)

HAND-BUILDING CERAMICS for Children and Teens - 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Cristen Shea

Building Up with Clay by Hand. Learn how to build pots, cups, plates, vases and other vessels in class using only the simplest hand building techniques. Begin with a slab of wet clay and through the course learn what it takes to sculpt your vessels from the bottom up. Decorate your creation with glaze before we fire them in our kilns for you to take for home use or display.

WHEEL THROWING CERAMICS for Young Adults and Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Cristen Shea

This course introduces students to creating ceramic forms utilizing the potter’s wheel. A range of techniques will be demonstrated as starting points to using the wheel as a tool for creating forms. The design, function, decoration, and presentation of the thrown forms will be emphasized through course assignments.

DRAWING AND PRINTMAKING for Children and Teens - 4pm to 6pm

Instructor: Tammy Wofsey

In this class you will learn drawing and printmaking skills. Printmaking allows students to duplicate artwork. Printmaking uses material that can be drawn, carved or chosen from material such as leaves, cloth or paper that is then placed on an inked plate that is hand cranked through a wheel press to create your artwork.

Fridays (July 15, 22, 29; August 5, 12)

DIGITAL ANIMATION for Children and Teens - 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Hector Canonge

Through the use of applications, demonstrations, and hands-on learning students will learn animation. By the end of the course students will have created their own animated shorts (30 seconds max.)

Can be attended in-person and virtually. Access to Adobe Photoshop is required for this class.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY for Teens and Adults - 2pm to 4pm

Instructor: Christopher Lopez

Participants will learn how to analyze, create, and speak about the images they see in their everyday lives. By discussing the technical aspects of digital photography students will learn about composition, framing, and form to better understand the deeper meaning of photographs. Students will have the opportunity to create their own original photos during every class in BRAC’s Media Lab and the immediate surroundings, BRAC’s garden and Green RoofTop.
