Snoflinga Montana Winter Festival 2023

Arts and Entertainment

January 5, 2023

From: Snoflinga Montana Winter Festival

Swedish for “snowflake”, SNöFLINGA is a free, community-sponsored festival that takes place in and around Butte during the winter months. A group of winter enthusiasts from Butte got together in November 2015 to brainstorm ways to encourage recreation in the community during the winter months. In 2016, SNöFLINGA came to life.  What started out in 2016 as a small winter festival with a few outdoor activities has expanded to include over 18 activities across 8 different venues.

The Three-day event is run by the Butte Community Fitness Foundation (BCFF) with generous support from community sponsors and dedicated volunteers.

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm: SNÖFLINGA LEARN TO CURL

Learn how to play the sport of curling! Curling is an Olympic sport in which players slide heavy granite stones down a sheet of ice towards a target area. Two teams, each with four players and eight stones, take turns sliding these stones toward the house, a circular target marked on the ice.

The path of the rock may be further influenced by two sweepers with brooms who accompany it as it slides down the sheet, using the brooms to change the state of the ice in front of the stone. A great deal of strategy and teamwork goes into choosing the ideal path and placement of a stone for each situation.

The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the center of the house at the conclusion of each end, which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones.
