Summer Reading Program Canva Templates 

Access Templates On State Library's Summer Reading Webpage

The State Library created Canva templates for libraries to customize and use with the Summer Library Program theme Find Your Voice.

At the bottom of the Summer Reading webpage, you'll find links to customize reading log bookmarks, Bingo boards (based on the age group) and prize drawing slips. There's also Teen and Children's Reading Challenge Sheets where youth can either read or complete learning activities to earn a prize!

How a Bunch of Stressed Out, Rural Librarians Came Together to Impact 3rd Grade Reading Scores

Wednesday, February 8: 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Join us for this special presentation as Elgin Public Library Director Lisa Leuck shares how she applied to be part of the Rural Library Fellowship (sponsored and funded by Partners for Education at Berea College and Save the Children). She'll also share how her project, “Level Up with the Library" was developed and implemented with a strategy that included changes in programs, systems, and policies to raise reading levels.

All Iowa Reads Exploring the Shortlists

Wednesday, February 22: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This webinar will introduce you to the 2023 All Iowa Reads shortlists. You'll hear booktalks and read-alike selections for the short-listed books on the adult list from Leslie Heinzler and Jill Martinez, Co-Chairs of the Adult Selection Committee.

Janeé Jackson-Doering, State Library Youth Services Consultant, will share for the kids and teen lists. Attendees will hear ideas for spotlighting these titles and the All Iowa Reads finalists in your library.

Join us for our webinar spotlighting the best new books for ages 0-18. Janeé will share book talks on the latest titles - including book suggestions for Storytime! There's a prize giveaway, too! Check It Out! shares collection development tips, publishing trends, and more! 

NOTE: There will be no Check It Out in March due to the STEM Fairs/Summer Reading Summits. Check It Out will return Tuesday, April 25.

The Dynamite Dozen

Wednesday, March 8, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.            

School snow day? Teens getting rambunctious? With 12 inexpensive items - AKA The Dynamite Dozen - (and a few staple items), you have access to over 50 programs you can instantly use to keep teens or tweens occupied!

Join guest presenter Cathy Pesincki, Teen Librarian from the Shawano County (WI) Library as she shares the item costs, sources for the items, and pictures of all the projects.

Examples for assembly and storage, including instructions, will be included. These are programs that can be assembled ahead of time and are passive so they will require little supervision.

Resource of the Month

Girls Who Code 

Girls Who Code is an organization that supports girls to learn coding.  This summer, they're offering two free virtual programs!

The Summer Immersion Program is a 2-week virtual program that teaches game design concepts.

The Self-Paced Program is a 6-week program that teaches coding and computer science concepts. Both programs are open to 9th-12 graders who identify as girls or non-binary. Any coding experience level is welcome. Any additional questions about the application can be sent via e-mail to [email protected].
