CONTINUING THIS WEEK...

POLITE SOCIETY throws, kicks, and punches the genre etiquette book out the window to deliver a fun film that blends Bollywood splendor and British wryness. A merry mash up of sisterly affection, parental disappointment and bold action, POLITE SOCIETY follows martial artist-in-training Ria Khan who believes she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. After enlisting the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood.

STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE -- The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family. With a mix of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like … well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET. First published in 1970, “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” is an enduring classic for a reason. This is a warm film, a good-hearted film, a funny film, with something to offer everyone. That’s so rare these days, but as we welcome the Judy Blumeissance with open arms, we need to remember it wasn’t always so rare, and the stories and characters that persist do so with good reason: They’re timeless.

COMING ATTRACTIONS...

YOU HURT MY FEELINGS - From acclaimed filmmaker Nicole Holofcener comes a sharply observed comedy about a novelist (Julia Louis Dreyfus) whose longstanding marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband give his honest reaction to her latest book. A film about trust, lies, and the things we say to the people we love most. A hit at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCI-FI FILM?

Open the pod bay doors, HAL. It’s time for the next Film Center Favorite Movie challenge. This time it’s Science Fiction. Not Horror and not Marvel, but a real Sci Fi movie that you love. And rather than saying “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that,” go ahead and submit it with a few sentences explaining your choice.

BE A GUEST PROGRAMMER

We'll accept your responses until May 31st. The MV Film Center staff will select the top 5 recommended movies to be featured in our June 6th Film Center e-blast newsletter and then voted on by YOU. The winner will receive two tickets to the screening and get to introduce their favorite Sci-Fi film on stage. We'll announced the winner in early June and the date of the screening at that time!

STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie

May 24th @ 7:30 pm
June 1st @ 4:00 pm

The film, which will incorporate documentary, archival and scripted elements, will recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood. The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film will chronicle Fox’s personal and professional triumphs and travails, and will explore what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease.

Director Davis Guggenheim has mixed a film of adventure and romance, comedy and drama, watching the film will feel like … well, like a Michael J. Fox movie.

ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET.

May 25th @ 4:00 pm

Starring Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates

First published in 1970, “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” is an enduring classic for a reason. This is a warm film, a good-hearted film, a funny film, with something to offer everyone. That’s so rare these days, but as we welcome the Judy Blumeissance with open arms, we need to remember it wasn’t always so rare, and the stories and characters that persist do so with good reason: They’re timeless.

Margaret Simon (newcomer, Abby Ryder Fortson) is just 11 going on 12 when her family moves from New York City to Farbrook, New Jersey. Margaret’s mother is Christian and her father is Jewish. Margaret has been raised without an affiliation to either faith, and does not practice an organized religion, although she frequently prays to God in her own words, beginning by saying, “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret.”
