LAGUNA CANYON ENRICHMENT CENTER 

EDUCATION

POWER HOUR

-There have been a lot of members cruising in for Power Hour!

DIY STEM

-Members participated in various activities from glow in the dark oobleck to cabbage potions. One of the main concepts that has been incorporated into the activities this month is for members to create a hypothesis (educated guess) before conducting an experiment. 

ENGINEERING CLUB

-Members participate in various activities such as tinker castles, haunted houses, boats, and 3D pens 

MYFUTURE CODING

-Members have been building their foundations on code.org and Scratch. These two websites have been bringing in returning and new members to the Coding Club!  

-Cora C. and Dahlia A. worked together on a Minecraft block code 

GARDEN CLUB

-This month in the garden, members did various things such as plant broccoli sprouts, deal with pests, mix fertilizer and soil together, and learn about pesticides 

TANAKA FARMS FIELD TRIP

-Members learned about the Fall fruits and vegetables that can be harvested during this time

ART

ART 4 THE HEART

-Members learned how artists plan and start their pieces, how to give them a title, and how to mix colors without making them look muddy or smudged.  

PRINTMAKING CLUB

-Members were introduced to printmaking and developed their own designs on a stencil, cut them out, and adhered it to a screen before printing them on tote bags.  

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB 

-Each Photo Club member selected a model and made a fabric camera filter or prop for their shots. 

JEWELRY DESIGN CLUB

-This month, members gained knowledge of how to create necklaces using clips and professional jewelry-making tools

CLAY TECH 

-Members created characters out of modeling clay using their imagination and creativity

HEALTH & WELLNESS

INSIDE OUT CLUB

-Inside Out Club has been successful thus far, and members are continuing to learn about the importance of being kind towards our own selves. 

-For one of the activities, the group decorated pots with positive affirmations and made them "emotional support plants.” Members then picked a flower, planted them into their pots and took them home to nurture. 

FRIENDSHIP DAY

-Friendship Day was a success! On October 24th the Club celebrated our second annual Friendship Day. Our community gathered to celebrate World Mental Health Day, National Stop Bullying Day, Unity Day, and Red Ribbon Week all on one day. 

-There was a sound bath in the Games Room, a community service project in Ed/Tech, yoga and fitness in the Gym, a drum circle on the Playground, friendship bracelets with the Laguna Beach Police Department in the Art Room, and a nice healthy treat at the end of the event!

Core Logic: Sound Bath

Taught our members ways to soothe the nervous system, help clear minds, & connect with their bodies.

Service Cope: Care Packages for Homeless Shelter & Senior Living Center

Taught our members the importance of giving back

WellBee Fitness: Yoga and fitness

Taught our members new fitness moves to keep their hearts pumping.

Taught our members the importance of music to heal and feel better.

Laguna Beach Police Department: Friendship bracelets in the Art Room

This wouldn't have been possible without our incredible staff here at Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach as well.

LEADERSHIP & SERVICE

LEADERS IN TRAINING (L.I.T)

-Members were busy planning multiple Club-wide events. 

-The group learned about budgeting and time management this month when putting together the spooky Halloween party. 

-The group learned how to prioritize certain items and had to make a few tough decisions on what they wanted to buy. 

SPORTS & REC

TRIPLE PLAY

-Triple Play is a program to get kids moving and develop friendships 

-Members played prisoner volleyball, rip city, kickball, shark tank, and british bulldog. 

TEAM SPORTS

-Members played soccer, capture the flag, high tide low tide, and hockey.

-The activities went well, and members learned about teamwork. 

GROMERCISE

-During the flag football game in Gromercise, there were a lot of comments about kids playing unfairly. The game was stopped, and we talked about what to do if someone is playing unfairly. After they were encouraged to think differently the game became fun again. 

CHEER CLUB

-The team captain is currently teaching cheers she has learned from the Laguna Beach High School cheerleaders.

-The squad is excited to bring on a volunteer cheer coach from the high school this upcoming month! 

-Cheering encourages the girls to have strong voices. 

PLAYGROUND

-Members get very excited about the playground; tag is one of their favorites.

-There has been a group of kids that has evolved throughout the last month with certain activities like handball, poison, soccer, foosball, and basketball. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

-Boys Basketball has begun, and there are currently over 150 members participating this season from ages 6-13 years old!

-Players came in for an evaluation so Erik could get to know each one of them

GAMES ROOM

LEGO CHALLENGE

-Members have the opportunity to work individually and in teams on different building themes 

-They showed their creativity when building racetracks in a car challenge or support beams when building a tall structure 

TRIVIA CLUB

-The goal of this program is to give members a chance to quiz each other and test their knowledge about a given weekly theme. 

-Members enjoy learning about the interesting facts.  

CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENTS

-The objective of the tournaments program is to have members compete and show good sportsmanship.  

-These tournaments can be played with many games in the games room, including pool, air hockey, foosball, or ping pong.

LAGUNA CANYON PRESCHOOL & KINDER BUDDIES

PRESCHOOL

TANAKA FARMS

PUMPKIN PATCH FIELD TRIP

-Members visited the petting zoo, take a wagon ride around the farm, pick their own carrots, cilantro, onions, radishes, and a pumpkin

-Everyone went home happy with their produce and eager to share what they learned with their parents 

LOCA

-LOCA is back and the preschoolers and TKs are loving it!

-LOCA is a local organization of art instructors that come and teach art to the kids every other week.

-Preschoolers have the art lesson every other Tuesday morning and TKs have it every other Wednesday right after lunch 

KINDER BUDDIES

HALLOWEEN CRAFTS

-To better improve their fine motor skills, members threaded white yarn across plates to create mummies. This activity was rather challenging for both groups, but they persevered and did a great job! 

-Members participate in making a haunted house, spooky pumpkins, spinning spiders, and more

STEM

-Members learned about several seasonal changes.

-Learned about the changing colors of the leaves, which plants bloom and thrive during fall, and the life cycle of a pumpkin.  

-Continued the topic of geometry (2D vs 3D) 

TRIPLE PLAY

-Zombie races, werewolf chases and bikes are various ways both TKs and Kinders get half of their energy out this month.

When they are not running around and hiding from one another, they are playing cops and robbers.  

THE LOFT AT LAGUNA CANYON

Chris introduced some of the teens to a new board game that they fell in love with. Edgar got some teens playing soccer in the teen center. It was a great few weeks before the teens had to leave the Loft for renovations and transition temporarily to the Chill Zone.

The Loft also welcomed a new member named Fu! She wasn’t familiar with anything at the Club, but staff made sure that she had a couple of friends to help her get used to the Teen Center. 

TEEN ART

-Teens struggle to remember the program is on Tuesdays and now it will be moved to Mondays.

-Chris tried to spice things up with a creepy Halloween-themed drawing at the end of the month.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS 

-The group had a good session with a new member participating.

HALLOWEEN WALK

-Teens at the Club were invited by the Laguna Beach Parents Club. Our teens passed out candy to kids, while they were walking in their costumes.  

BLUEBIRD ENRICHMENT CENTER

Members were able to go on a field trip to Tanaka Farms this past month! They also took part in a Halloween party.

At Bluebird, the backroom Is currently being converted to a Games Room. They just got a foldable Ping Pong table. The staff and members are excited about the potential in this new space!

SMART GIRLS

-Members learned about the four lobes of the brain through an edible Jell-O Activity

-Members made jewelry and learn the importance and representation jewelry can have

-The girls learn about stereotypes by making assumptions about fictional characters. Members learned that you can’t judge a book by its cover. 

FANTASY FOOTBALL CLUB

-The league members have been learning how to complete trades with each other. 

-Members are looking up stats and doing their research before they start negotiating with their league mates. 

-Members are asking every day if they can make trades or do Fantasy Football Club! 

PHOTO CLUB 

-Members are involved with several aspects of photography some of which include working with different orientations and using lighting to alter the atmosphere of their photos. 

-Members completed a scavenger hunt where they had a list of things in the park to find and take photos of. Their goal for the month was to take photos of the different concepts learned during the program.  

CREATIVE DRAWING CLUB

-For this month, each member was given a prompt or list of different words for them to create a story.  

-This program has helped members think outside the box and help them learn how to spell and expand their vocabulary. 

CHOIR CLUB

-Members of the Choir Club have begun rehearsing the songs they will sing for their concert. They worked together to learn the lyrics of “Determinate” - by Lemonade Mouth and the dance that goes along with the chorus.  

-Members have greatly improved their confidence and have become more comfortable singing together.

FLAG FOOTBALL 

-Flag Football gives members an opportunity to compete each Thursday and learn a new skill that will be useful not only in football but in life. 

-Members have begun implementing comradeship by choosing to shake hands before each game. This helps as a cornerstone of good character development. 

WOLF PACK 

-The program has given the participants a place where they can talk freely and share information about the week's topic without judgment.  

-Members have learned about the qualities of a good friend, making good and bad choices, who their heroes are, and how they can control their emotions, just to name a few. 

SCRATCH ANIMATION & CODING

-Younger members expanded their use of loop blocks and conditional blocks. 

-Older members created the same system that allowed for directional movement but added a 2nd sprite that interacted with their first sprite.  

MONEY TALKS 

-Members discussed income tax, savings and interest rates, and supply and demand as well as discussed the usage of taxes, tax brackets, and different types of tax. 

-Members then discussed the importance of savings and different savings accounts and were given an opportunity to set aside some of their money in a “savings account” 

-Members tackled the concepts of supply and demand in a free market and talked about the factors that change supply and demand as well as the price of goods and services.  

IMPROV CLUB

-Members focused on group scenes in Improv which included games where groups of 3 and 4 would work on problem-solving together.  

-The groups created bold characters, picked a location, picked a problem to overcome, and then worked together in a scene to make those challenges come to life.  

KINDER CLUB

-Members made mummy lanterns using gauze to wrap around a mason jar, paper eyes and mouth, and a fake candlelight on the inside.

-They also learned to trace a pumpkin outline onto a clear sheet of plastic, then fill in the pumpkin shape with orange and green tissue paper, which allowed them to practice working within the lines.

THE PORT

This past month, members participated in arts and crafts, board games like UNO, chess, poker, strength and conditioning exercises, basketball fundamentals, computer games, D & D, pickle ball, cooking, and pool tournaments.  

The Port is starting to inform students about community service opportunities and future field trips for the upcoming holidays. 

EL TORO PARK 

Staff members introduced a new game that has a similar idea to the game, Among Us, but we call it Vampire. It has been a big hit and part of the spooky season theme. 

Members also had the opportunity to decorate their own trick-or-treat bags and pumpkins. Additionally, Terry and Kristie Anderson, the Club’s Board President and Marketing Director respectively, brought their vintage truck for the ETP members to decorate for the Lake Forest Trunk or Treat event!

JUST DANCE

-Just Dance has been a huge hit! Members of all ages and both boys and girls participated. 

-Staff member, Ileanna, has the program designed to where members will learn about a new decade of dance moves each week, then we let members have free range to choose whatever song or era they want to dance to. 

STEAM

-Members took on the challenge of building mini parachutes out of tissue paper and string. They created little people out of pipe cleaners and attach them to their parachutes.  

-Members created a sound spinner with notecards and rubber bands as well as a candy maze.  

ART 4 THE HEART

-Members decorated their own pumpkins and trick-or-treat bags thanks to the coordination of our Community Development Director, Katie. 

-Members had the freedom to express themselves with various supplies while decorating their pumpkins and trick-or-treat bags. 

SMART MOVES and SMART Girls

-Members made affirmation bracelets on the non-student day. 

-Staff talked to members about the importance of positive self-talk.

-SMART Girls discussed how important affirmations are and what a trying time middle school can be

OXFORD PREPARTORY ACADEMIES

Oxford Saddleback Valley

After School Program 

This past month, members were able to experience holiday-related arts and crafts and fun and exciting new STEAM activities.

Members also went on a field trip to Tanaka Farms

and experienced picking their own veggies and pumpkins!

BGC Oxford SV was able to participate in OPA’s family fun carnival night where staff saw many of our members dressed up in their costumes and spin the prize wheel to win something fun!

Oxford Sites have also introduced a new After School Kinder Care program! This program allows Kindergarten students to stay at the Club until their older siblings get out. They’ll be able to receive homework help, play games, experience arts, and crafts, and more! 

TRIPLE PLAY

-Members have continued their love for soccer during Triple Play, and immediately want to split into teams to play against each other, while other members choose to be the cheerleaders. 

-Another game that members tried was bean bag toss using hula hoops.

STEAM

-Members crafted using rotational angles creating an almost optical illusion. 

-Members used rubber bands, index cards, and foam pieces to create a sound that replicated a group of bees. To succeed in making the noise, members had to spin their spinner really fast! 

CREATIVE HANDS 

-Members learned how to make a picture out of magazine cutouts, like a collage.

-Members also learned how to make a bouquet of flowers using pipe cleaners and their hands.  

SMART MOVES

-For this month’s SMART Moves program members learned how to talk about healthy stress-coping strategies by standing across from a partner and passing a frisbee. Every time they pass the frisbee, members give one strategy they can use to help cope with stress or other emotions they may be feeling.   

-Another fun activity that members are creating is a compliment box. 

FILM CLUB

-Members love Film Club! The planned activities help them learn new ways to take pictures and how to use a camera. 

-Members also went on a picture scavenger hunt.  

HEALTHY FOOD ARRANGEMENTS

-This month’s Healthy Food Arrangements program focused on members' creative side as well as making fun spooky related food art. 

-Members created an owl using apple slices, pretzels, oranges, and raisins. Once they made an owl, they tried their hand at another image. 

Oxford South Orange County

After School Program 

This month at OPA SOC we spent a lot of time getting ready for the Halloween spirit. We did various projects this month to go with this spooky season.  

For Karen’s “Future Baristas” program she did various Fall inspired drinks like Hot Chocolate and Pumpkin Cream Frappes. We’ve also been playing spooky-inspired games like Zombie tag and Ghosts in the Graveyard.

DEBATE CLUB

-This month for Triple Play our members played sharks and minnows, kickball, gaga ball, and different variations of dodgeball.

-Our Triple Play activities have been beneficial for our members because it helps with getting their energy out and we all have fun playing together.  

FUTURE BARISTAS 

-For STEM this our members made Starbucks-inspired drinks through Ms. Karen’s program, “Future Baristas”. They learned how to measure and mix different ingredients together to make their drinks.

-This program creates such a fun environment because all the members get to create and learn from one another. 

VIVA MEXICO

-We spent a lot of time creating and decorating for all our different crafts. With Ms. Daisy’s multicultural program called, “Viva Mexico”, they made a lot of art projects inspired by Mexican culture. 

STEAM

-Members took on the challenge of building mini parachutes out of tissue paper and string. They created little people out of pipe cleaners and attach them to their parachutes

-Members had lots of fun creating a sound spinner with notecards and rubber bands as well as a candy maze using gummy worms.
