The Grace Museum - The History Of Independence Day

Arts and Entertainment

July 28, 2022

From: The Grace Museum

Come see our newest Cultural Heritage Exhibition!

Independence Day in the United States is celebrated every July 4th to commemorate the Declaration of Independence in 1776 with fireworks, parades, and parties. Take a look at the exhibition to see how Abilene has celebrated throughout the years.

The Grace Museum is collaborating with Abilene Christian University’s Introduction to Public History: Interpreting American Pasts course to create monthly exhibitions that coincide with different cultural heritage months throughout the year. These exhibitions highlight the narratives of various cultural groups that are integral to Abilene’s history while weaving these stores into the broader historical fabric of the United States.

"The brilliant colors and the representation of a strong, independent, confident woman are what intrigues me with this fan.
Oh the stories she could tell..."

-- Sheila Scevers, Director of Donor Relations

This advertising fan is for Abdulla Cigarettes, a brand of cigarettes made by Abdulla & Co., Ltd., founded in London in 1902. Their ads tended to "focus on glamour and luxury rather than exoticism."
