Shastri Akella on THE SEA ELEPHANTS - A Novel with Andrea Lawlor (In-Person)
Thursday, August 31 at 7:00pm ET

For fans of Shuggie Bain and A Burning, a queer coming-of-age novel set in 1990s India, about a young man who joins a traveling street theater troupe, seeking to outrun the dark secrets of his past

"An exquisite novel destined to be a classic.” Eric Nguyen, author of Things We Lost to the Water

After the sudden deaths of his beloved twin sisters, Shagun flees his own guilt, his mother’s grief, and his father’s violent disapproval by enrolling at an all-boys boarding school. But he doesn’t find true belonging until he encounters a traveling theater troupe performing the Hindu myths of his childhood.

Shagun thrives, easily embodying mortals and gods, men and women, and living on the road, where his father can’t catch him. When Shagun meets Marc, a charming photographer, he seems to have found the love he always longed for. But not even Marc can save him from his lingering shame, nor his father’s ever-present threat to send him to a conversion center.

Wednesday, September 6 at 7pm ET

Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau came to the Adirondacks expecting to die of consumption, or tuberculosis; his recovery led to a booming health industry that lasted 70 years and brought close to 100,000 people to the mountains seeking a cure. Trudeau arrived in Saranac Lake from New York City in 1873, and dedicated the rest of his life to understanding, treating, and preventing the disease. Maya Binyam on Hangman - A Novel with Alex Jennings (Virtual)
Thursday, September 7 at 7pm ET

A novel about exile, diaspora, and the impossibility of Black refuge in America and beyond. In Hangman, Maya Binyam tells the story of that search, and of the phantoms, guides, tricksters, bureaucrats, debtors, taxi drivers, relatives, riddles, and strangers that will lead to the truth. It is an uncommonly assured debut: an existential journey; a tragic farce; a slapstick tragedy; and a strange, and strangely honest, story of one man’s stubborn quest to find refuge—in this world and in the world that lies beyond it.

Adrian McKinty Live with Colin McEnroe on THE DETECTIVE UP LATE: A Sean Duffy Novel (In-Person)
Saturday, September 9 at 7pm ET

Irish thriller writer Adrian McKinty comes to The Mark Twain House & Museum to discuss his latest Sean Duffy thriller, The Detective Up Late, with WNPR’s Colin McEnroe.

Born in Belfast in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles,” Adrian McKinty traveled to the United States as an illegal alien, finding work in bars, on building sites, and as a Teamster driver. He married an American and became a U.S. citizen, eventually becoming a teacher in Colorado. After he moved to Australia with his wife, the Oxford-educated philosophy major turned his hand to writing novels. Although his books were acclaimed and award-winning, he found himself evicted, bartending, and driving for Uber…until his novel The Chain impacted the bestseller lists and changed his life completely.

McKinty chats with writer, broadcaster and humorist Colin McEnroe on his improbable journey and his latest sure-to-be-blockbuster, The Detective Up Late, the latest novel in his blockbuster Sean Duffy series set in Belfast.
