Eric Vanden Eykel will discuss the Magi and how a story of only twelve verses went on to create a rich literary and artistic tradition. He will discuss the birth of the Magi story, its enrichments and its artistic expressions, and its legacy in our modern culture. Join us to hear how the Magi story has elicited fascination in the last two thousand years and what its legacy tells us about its storytellers—and ourselves.

Thursday, December 14 at 7p ET - THE THIRD RECONSTRUCTION: America's Struggle with Racial Justice in the 21st Century with Peniel E. Joseph and Elizabeth Herbin-Triant

In?The Third Reconstruction, Peniel E. Joseph offers a new interpretation of our recent history. He draws connections and insights across centuries from America’s first and second Reconstructions, the movements that arose after the Civil War and during the civil rights era, to a Third Reconstruction in our current age. While the first two Reconstructions fell tragically short of their grand aims, a Third Reconstruction offers a new chance to at last achieve dignity and citizenship for Black Americans—an opportunity to choose hope over fear.

Thursday, January 12 at 7pm ET - IN THE TIME OF OUR HISTORY - A Novel with Suzanne Pari and Karen Mohammadi (Virtual)

An intimate yet universal story, IN THE TIME OF OUR HISTORY is a novel that explores the entangled lives within an Iranian American family. We follow Mitra Jahani as she returns to her parents’ New Jersey home to honor her sister’s One Year – the Persian tradition of marking the first anniversary of someone’s death—and how she experiences the tensions between family and duty, tradition and identity, expectations and desires. It is a story about home and the roles of women within it and what happens when we release cultural expectations around these roles.

Monday, December 19 at 7pm ET - CLEMENS CONVERSATIONS: DECKING THE HALLS & TRIMMING THE TREE - Virtual Livestream from The Mark Twain House!

“Xmas was invented to knock out the health & strength accumulated in the previous 11 months & shorten people’s lives 10 per cent a year – it does its work & accomplishes its mission with fiendish certainty.”

While Sam Clemens may have joked about finding Christmas preparations a bit tiring, his daughter Clara fondly remembered the “royal preparations for Christmastide” each year in their Hartford home. This program explores how every member of the household helped to get the home ready for Christmas, as well as the meals they ate, the stories they read, and the games they played.

This program is delivered live from inside the historic home itself, which is completely transformed for the holiday season. At the end of the presentation, you will be able to ask any questions you want about the home and family, and request our roving camera-person show you any part of the home that you want!

Streaming Admission: $10. Free for museum members. LEARN MORE & REGISTER HERE.

Tuesday, December 20 at 7pm ET - I'LL TAKE NEW HAVEN; Tales of Discovery and Rejuvenation with Lary Bloom in conversation with Steve Courtney

Journalist and author Lary Bloom and poet Suzanne Levine moved to New Haven in 2015, where they soon acquired Lucca, an Italian water dog. The city won their hearts, and Bloom’s walks on its pavements led to new columns, each one striking an aspect of life, ideas, and gentle humor – tempered with sadness and justifiable outrage at the state of the world. At Lary’s side, Lucca provides a quiet, or not-so-quiet, canine perspective.
