Celebrating 50 years as Long Island’s Premier Not-for-Profit, Member-Supported, Independent Community Cinema

This week at the Cinema we are opening the highly anticipated new film from Ben Affleck about Nike's signing of Michael Jordan, and the creation of the Air Jordan brand, 'Air'! We will also be opening the heartwarming new Irish film 'Róise & Frank', the outstanding French film 'One Fine Morning', and the new documentary about literary giants Robert Caro & Robert Gottlieb, 'Turn Every Page'.

We will also continue our run of the film that won the top prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, A.V. Rockwell's 'A Thousand and One'.

Special events this week include the opening night of our 2023 Spring Preview Club - which will feature a very special screening with two Oscar Nominated guests: Lasse Hallström & Lena Olin. Other special events include a screening of Mel Brooks' classic comedy 'Young Frankenstein', and the 'NY Cat Film Festival'!

Róise & Frank

Róise (Bríd Ní Neachtain) is still grieving the loss of her husband, Frank, when a mysterious dog shows up at her door. Mildly annoyed by the canine attempting to disrupt her mourning, she attempts to ignore him. But before long, a series of coincidences convince her that somehow this shaggy dog is her husband Frank reincarnated. Soon the dog will win over others in their small town, as well as becoming the unlikely coach to a shy, hurling-loving local boy, before mysteriously disappearing. Part drama, part comedy, this wonderful Irish film is sure to deliver smiles, tears, and laughs to film lovers of all ages.

One Fine Morning

Few filmmakers are as adept at exploring the contours of modern love and grief as Mia Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island). His latest film is a profoundly resonant chronicle of a woman swept up in her obligations as a mother, daughter, worker, and lover. Anchored by Léa Seydoux’s richly layered performance, One Fine Morning illuminates the wonder and the turbulence of everyday life. Sandra (Seydoux) spends her days working as a freelance translator, being an attentive single mother to her eight-year-old daughter. Despite her flowing beauty and charisma, she cannot help but feel her love life is behind her, until she runs into her old friend Clément (Melvil Poupaud), a cosmochemist with a son he adores and a marriage that he fears may be losing its spark. Their time together seems blissful and easy, even as every other aspect of their affair feels frustratingly complicated and filled with heartache.

The captivating elegance of Hansen-Løve’s approach arises from the trust she places in her fully developed characters and her refusal to infuse any one event in their lives with artificial drama. Seydoux — that rare French star who shifts smoothly between Hollywood blockbusters (the James Bond franchise), daring international works (The Lobster, Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future), and the finest French cinema — is stunningly realistic in bringing this to life.

NY Cat Film Festival

Featuring a cat adoption pop-up with Golden Paw Society!

The annual Cat Film Festival is a philanthropic celebration through film of our relationship with the mysterious felines who share our world. This collection of short films from around the world educates, entertains, and help us explore the mystique of the fascinating felines who share our lives - benefiting a local animal welfare group that works on behalf of kitty cats. A portion of ticket sales benefit our friends at Golden Paw Society, Inc.

This year's Festival had the most international submissions of any year yet, with films from Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Iran, Italy, Kuwait, Malta, Poland, Spain, Taiwan, the UK. (96 min)
