This Week at the Cinema: December 16 - December 22
Celebrating Over 45 years as Long Island’s Premier Not-for-Profit, Member-Supported, Independent Community Cinema

This week, we open two films which will only play for week long engagements, Guillermo del Toro's 'Pinocchio' and Ali Abbasi's 'Holy Spider'.

Guillermo del Toro's brilliant reimagining of Pinocchio is a haunting and beautiful instant classic about the things that make life beautiful. While 'Holy Spider', from director Ali Abbasi (Border), is a grim indictment of misogyny in modern Iran, at a time when people are standing up in defense of women's rights.

We also continue our runs of the newest films from Academy Award winner Sam Mendes' (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall, 1917), 'Empire of Light', starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman, and Steven Spielberg's semiautobiographical coming-of-age tale, 'The Fabelmans'.

Make sure to check out our calendar for all of the screenings and special events coming up!

We also opened a merch store! Click here to get your own CAC gear.

ONE-WEEK-ONLY

Holy Spider

Based on a true story

Female journalist Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi) travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad to investigate a serial killer who believes he is doing the work of God, cleansing the streets of sinners by murdering sex workers. As the body count mounts, and Rahimi draws closer to exposing his crimes, the opportunity for justice grows harder to attain as the ‘Spider Killer’ is embraced by many as a hero. Based on the horrific true story of serial killer Saeed Hanaei, acclaimed writer-director Ali Abbasi (Border) unveils a gripping crime thriller, and a daring indictment of a society in which rough justice is routinely a fact of life.

Empire of Light

From Academy Award Winning Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall, 1917)

Oscar Winner Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward star in this poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema, directed by Sam Mendes and captured by cinematographer Roger Deakins. Hilary (Colman) works the front of the house, opening the theater every morning and overseeing a brimming concession stand. When Stephen (Ward) arrives as an eager new employee, the two form a quick, if outwardly unlikely, connection. Hilary hides a troubled past, struggling with mental health, while Stephen, a young Black man, grapples with the racism rampant in 1980s Britain.
