Thursday, April 27

International Day- Students at Lindley Elementary will showcase their knowledge during a “Parade of Nations” to kick off the school’s international day activities. Students will dress in traditional attire to represent their home countries. Later that night, families are invited to the school to see international performers, share their own culture through displays and food. The parade begins at 7:25 am. The evening event is from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm.

Let’s Grow Together – The time to register for kindergarten has arrived! Children who will be five years old by August 31, 2023, are invited to join the next class of kindergartners in Guilford County Schools. Schools across the district will have Kindergarten Kickoff events for incoming students and their families to get a classroom experience through tours and activities. Kindergarten registration can be found at gcsnc.schoolmint.net. A full schedule of open house events can be found here.

Friday, April 28

Gator Celebration- Last week, when he saw his best friend struggling to breathe at lunch, 4th grade Henry put skills he learned days earlier to work. Instead of freezing when seeing his friend turn colors, he jumped into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the food from his friend’s airway, saving his life. Henry says he learned the maneuver from his grandfather a week prior. Friday, at 8:00 am, Henry’s family and classmates will celebrate his courage with a special announcement and indoor parade. Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast- Southern Elementary is having a volunteer appreciation breakfast next Friday, April 28th in their media center from 7:30–9:00 a.m. and will present the Bethanne Jennings Memorial Volunteer of the Year award to a volunteer who is voted on by staff. The award is in honor of one of their former amazing volunteers who passed away due to cancer. As a district, the number of volunteers in schools has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Monday, May 1st

New Teacher Signing Day – Join Guilford County Schools as it celebrates its new teachers. Several new GCS educators will be recognized at a signing day celebration. New hires will sign their teaching contracts with family and friends present. This event begins at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in the Eugene Street Boardroom.  

Tuesday, May 2nd

Better Together: GCS Strategic Direction - the public is invited as Dr. Oakley shares the steps GCS will take to foster student, staff success, and highlight ways the community can get engaged. Students from across the district will showcase their talents in performances as community members reflect on the conversations they’ve had about where the district has been, its current state and what they hope for GCS in the future. The launch of the GCS strategic direction begins at 5:30 at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. Parking at the Bellemeade parking deck is free as long as you leave after 6:00 pm.

Moments with Mom- Mothers and their children will gather for education and empowerment. Triangle Lake Montessori is launching Moments With Mom. It’s a monthly gathering where the group can engage in meaningful conversation through activities centered around motivation and building community.

FAFSA Helpline – Families and students needing assistance filling out the all-important FAFSA form can get help. Guilford Parent Academy and GCS Counseling Services will have a hotline for Title One Families to assist them with filling out the application. Staff will be on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to walk families through the process. The number is 336-370-3270.

Pathways Showcase - Each semester, students from The Middle College at UNCG showcase their college Pathways projects to our school community and stakeholders. Our college Pathways class is instrumental for preparing our students to be College, Career and Life Ready. Freshmen will showcase their projects between 9:30 am and 11:00 am in the Elliott University Center Cone Ballroom.

Congressional Art Celebration – Vivienne Korette, a student at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, is the 1st place winner of this year’s 6th district Congressional Art Competition. Korette’s work, “Eternally Entwined,” will be on display as Representative Kathy Manning formally recognizes the student for her achievement. The celebration begins at 4:00 pm at the African American Atelier on N Davie Street in Greensboro.

Student Awarded more than $1m in scholarships and grants- Ben Johnson has always been a standout while at the Middle College at UNCG. His teacher says he has always been driven to excel and to push himself academically. Ben is on track to earn 40 hours of UNCG course credits by the conclusion of his senior year. As one might expect, Ben’s college acceptances and college financial awards are a testament to his hard work. As it currently stands, Ben has been accepted to 17 colleges and universities and has been awarded $1,290,692 in grants and scholarships which puts him in the top percentage of his class for college acceptances and financial awards. Some of the colleges and universities include Guilford College (Nathan Hunt Scholarship recipient), High Point University (Presidential Fellowship recipient), Oberlin College & Conservatory John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship recipient), UNC Chapel Hill (Wood Scholar Recipient), UNCG (Chancellor Scholarship recipient), and Wake Forest University (Recipient of $80,000 annual financial award.) Student Nominated for The Congress of Future Medical Leaders – Zaynab Abdusamad, a 11 at Eastern Guilford High School of Whitsett, NC is a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Zaynab's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent North Carolina based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
