Better Together: GCS Strategic Direction - the public is invited as Dr. Oakley shares the steps GCS will take to foster student, staff success, and highlight ways the community can get engaged. Students from across the district will showcase their talents in performances as community members reflect on the conversations they’ve had about where the district has been, its current state and what they hope for GCS in the future. The launch of the GCS strategic direction begins at 5:30 at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. Parking at the Bellemeade parking deck is free as long as you leave after 6:00 pm.

Moments with Mom- Mothers and their children at Triangle Lake Montessori will gather for education and empowerment. Triangle Lake Montessori is launching Moments With Mom. It’s a monthly gathering where the group can engage in meaningful conversation through activities centered around motivation and building community. The event begins at 7:45 am.

FAFSA Helpline – Families and students needing assistance filling out the all-important FAFSA form can get help. Guilford Parent Academy and GCS Counseling Services will have a hotline for Title One Families to assist them with filling out the application. Staff will be on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to walk families through the process. The number is 336-370-3270.

Pathways Showcase - Each semester, students from The Middle College at UNCG showcase their college Pathways projects to our school community and stakeholders. Our college Pathways class is instrumental for preparing our students to be College, Career and Life Ready. Freshmen will showcase their projects between 9:30 am and 11:00 am in the Elliott University Center Cone Ballroom.

Congressional Art Celebration – Vivienne Korette, a student at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, is the 1^st place winner of this year’s 6^th district Congressional Art Competition. Korette’s work, “Eternally Entwined,” will be on display as Representative Kathy Manning formally recognizes the student for her achievement. The celebration begins at 4:00 pm at the African American Atelier on N Davie Street in Greensboro.

Thursday, May 4

Community Meeting – The community is invited to learn about plans for the proposed Katherine G. Johnson School. The meeting is from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm in the Multipurpose room at Colfax Elementary.

GCS Goes Green- On Friday, May 5^th, GCS students and staff will wear green for Mental Health Awareness Month. 

Student Awarded more than $1m in scholarships and grants- Ben Johnson has always been a standout while at the Middle College at UNCG. His teacher says he has always been driven to excel and to push himself academically. Ben is on track to earn 40 hours of UNCG course credits by the conclusion of his senior year. As one might expect, Ben’s college acceptances and college financial awards are a testament to his hard work. As it currently stands, Ben has been accepted to 17 colleges and universities and has been awarded $1,290,692 in grants and scholarships which puts him in the top percentage of his class for college acceptances and financial awards. Some of the colleges and universities include Guilford College (Nathan Hunt Scholarship recipient), High Point University (Presidential Fellowship recipient), Oberlin College & Conservatory John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship recipient), UNC Chapel Hill (Wood Scholar Recipient), UNCG (Chancellor Scholarship recipient), and Wake Forest University (Recipient of $80,000 annual financial award.) Student Nominated for The Congress of Future Medical Leaders – Zaynab Abdusamad, a 11 at Eastern Guilford High School of Whitsett, NC is a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Zaynab's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent North Carolina based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
