Monday, November 28

Bikes for Kids Surprise – Guilford County Schools (GCS) in partnership with the Bikes for Kids Foundation will launch a series of surprise bike giveaways. GCS is continuing its partnership with the Bikes for Kids Foundation and their Bikes for Kids program. Third-grade students are asked to write an essay based on the prompt “Kindness Matters.” The students are told that the top three essay writers will win a bike. However, at the end of the assembly and to the surprise of everyone in attendance, every 3rd grade student in the school will get a brand-new bike and helmet.   (We want you to come, but please don’t publicize ahead of time. We want the secret to stay intact!) The first two events are at Union Hill Elementary School at 9:00 am and Fairview Elementary School at 11:30 a.m.

Native American Heritage Month Demonstration – GCS has Native students from 30+ Tribes and Nations! Throughout the month, students will learn about different aspects of Native culture. Sumner Elementary will host an assembly featuring GCS American Indian Education Coordinator Stephen Bell and local powwow dancers. The event begins at 9:00 a.m.

Tuesday, November 29

Parent Engagement Night – Weaver Academy will host an event for parents to learn more about how they can be involved in their student’s education. Families will have an opportunity to experience CTE, performing and visual arts and academic classes in a shortened version of the school’s typical bell schedule. The event is from 6:30 p.m – 8:00 p.m.

Cash for College Night – Parents and students can learn more about how to get money to pay for college. GCS Counseling services is hosting a free, interactive workshop to help seniors and their families ease the financial burden of college. Families who have already filled out their FAFSA will be entered to win prizes. The virtual event is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Families can register to attend here.

Wednesday, November 30

Industry in the Classroom – Students will lead two exciting events that showcase the industries represented in the district’s five Signature Career Academies. Guests will learn about flying drones, creating codes, cybersecurity hacking, supply chain & logistics and healthcare procedures. The events are from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Thursday, December 1

Career and College Promise – Parents of high school juniors and seniors can learn more about GTCC’s Career and College Promise (CCP) program. The program gives students the opportunity to earn college credit tuition-free while still in high school. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Koury Hospitality Careers Center on E. Main Street in Jamestown. Families can use this link to register.

The federal program covering the costs of school meals has ended. Families must apply online to receive free meals by visiting www.lunchapplication.com
