Envelopes of Love Fundraiser

The Tifton-Tift County Public Library is back from our January programming hiatus and kicking things off with a bang! We have a fantastic calendar full of new programming but we need a bit of help from our community to fund even bigger and better things! Therefore, for the whole month of February, we will be running an Envelopes of Love Fundraiser!

How does it work? Easy peasy! Envelopes representing different monetary amounts ($1-$50) will be displayed in the lobby of the library. Patrons can share some love for TTCPL and grab an envelope that fits their budget and bring it to the circulation desk. Donations can be made by cash, check, or debit/credit card, either publicly or anonymously. That’s it! Donors that chose a public donation will be included on our HUGE THANK YOU list at the end of the month. Proceeds will all go directly into our Programming fund.

Murder & Mimosas

We love true crime, and you love true crime, so let’s get together and obsess! Join us for Murder & Mimosas as we dive into solved, unsolved, and unexplained murder cases. We meet on the last Saturday of the month, starting on February 25th. The first meeting will be an introduction, and then the group will decide what cases will be discussed moving forward. You must be 21 or older to attend, and an ID will be required at check-in.

Financial Literacy Initiative

Tifton’s Financial Literacy Initiative “strives to better equip a population to make good decisions on credit and better position assets and resources that are effective and productive, resulting in significant personal, household-level, small business and community-wide impact.” The Initiative will be holding events throughout the year.

The next event will be Understanding Credit Report & Credit Score, presented by Dr. Yangxuan Liu, Assistant Professor of Agricultural & Applied Economics, UGA on Tuesday, February 21st 5:30–7:00 PM at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center in Tifton. Register for the event online at <www.tifton.net> or in person at Tifton City Hall.

If you have questions, call (229) 391-3868 or email [email protected].

Nacho Normal Book Club

We don’t have boring book clubs at the library, as we have the Nacho Normal Book Club! The successor to the Boozy Book Club, the Nacho Normal Book Club will meet in the library board room on Tuesday, February 28th 5–6 PM to discuss Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton and enjoy some delicious goodies from Taqueria Hermanos Chavez.

Adult Fiction

Shockwaves are running through the small town of Hernia with the news that an enormous, biblical-themed amusement park is to be built on its doorstep, destroying the community’s peaceful way of life forever. And the man spearheading this so-called Armageddonland? None other than Magdalena’s ex-husband, the duplicitous Aaron Miller.

At a public demonstration to showcase his plans for the new park, Aaron bites into a delicious homemade tart — with fatal consequences. It’s clear the tart was poisoned…but who baked it?

As the leader of the local resistance against the project and her acrimonious history with her ex well known, Magdalena immediately falls under suspicion. Determined to clear her name, she resolves to find the real killer, and soon finds herself wrestling with a number of scandalous secrets lurking beneath Hernia’s seemingly staid surface.

Adult Nonfiction

Nearly a decade into the second wave of America’s overdose crisis, pharmaceutical companies have yet to answer for the harms they created. As pending court battles against opioid makers, distributors, and retailers drag on, addiction rates have soared to record-breaking levels during the COVID pandemic, illustrating the critical need for leadership, urgency, and change. Meanwhile, there is scant consensus between law enforcement and medical leaders, nor an understanding of how to truly scale the programs that are out there, working at the ragged edge of capacity and actually saving lives.

Distilling this massive, unprecedented national health crisis down to its character-driven emotional core as only she can, Beth Macy takes us into the country’s hardest hit places to witness the devastating personal costs that one-third of America’s families are now being forced to shoulder. Here we meet the ordinary people fighting for the least of us with the fewest resources, from harm reductionists risking arrest to bring lifesaving care to the homeless and addicted to the activists and bereaved families pushing to hold Purdue and the Sackler family accountable. These heroes come from all walks of life; what they have in common is an up-close and personal understanding of addiction that refuses to stigmatize — and therefore abandon — people who use drugs, as big pharma execs and many politicians are all too ready to do.

Like the treatment innovators she profiles, Beth Macy meets the opioid crisis where it is — not where we think it should be or wish it was. Bearing witness with clear eyes, intrepid curiosity, and unfailing empathy, she brings us the crucial next installment in the story of the defining disaster of our era, one that touches every single one of us, whether directly or indirectly. A complex story of public health, big pharma, dark money, politics, race, and class that is by turns harrowing and heartening, infuriating and inspiring, Raising Lazarus is a must-read for all Americans.

Children's

If you told Sloane Osburn and Amelia Miller-Poe that they’d be hiding in their town cemetery from an evil mastermind, they would have been hard-pressed to believe you. If you also told them that person was intent on beating them to a cache of long-lost jewels using nothing more than a slingshot and wicked aim, they’d have been sure you got your facts wrong. Finally, if you told them they’d be doing all of this as friends…well, they would have been sure you needed medical attention.

Whether through serendipity (really, really good luck) or zemblanity (really, really bad luck), someone tricked their teacher into using their seventh-grade class to investigate the mystery of their town’s long-missing treasure. From there, things have escalated. Quickly. Now, the girls are stuck hiding behind a gravestone, dodging acorns (who knew acorns could be so threatening?), and just a few clues short of those jewels.

It’s up to these enemies-turned-partners to uncover centuries-old clues to find the treasure at the end of this book before the mysterious person on their trail can get to it first…

Young Adult

When life supplies eleven-year-old Tommy Grant with some unfavorable circumstances intruding on his otherwise tranquil life in rural 1980’s Ohio, he retreats into the spell-binding Order of Cosmic Champions. When he discovers that the largely successful animated program and toy line is holding a nationwide “Create-A-Character” contest where applicants submit their action figure designs, Tommy knows he has to enter as surely as he knows his own name. But when Tommy’s character design fails to win the contest, he finds his world crumbling from all sides. And there is only one way he knows to fix it.

What follows is a whirlwind coming-of-age adventure of righting wrongs, overcoming perilous obstacles, confronting our inner demons, and challenging the limits of reality. In this waxing nostalgic and imaginative fantasy, readers will discover what excitement lies waiting when you take risks and conquer your fears. Only one question remains: In the final hour when you heed the call, the courage to give your all, will you stand or fall?
