Arts and Entertainment

February 1, 2024

From: Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival

The John Brown Project partners with the Berlin Equity Action Team and Our Culture is Beautiful to screen two short documentary films celebrating Connecticut abolition heroes. The evening will also include a Harriet Tubman interpretation, African drumming, speakers, and a Q&A discussion with the film producers and performers.

We will screen and discuss two documentary films, The 29th Connecticut and His Truth Is Marching On. The films explore abolition, equality, music, and American history.

The 29th Connecticut chronicles the story of Connecticut's 29th Black Infantry who fought in the Civil War and was a catalyst to securing victory for the Union Army. This Documentary Short recently won "Best Connecticut Film" at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival.

His Truth Is Marching On is a film about American music from 1619 to hip hop as told through the Civil War song "John Brown's Body—a song which celebrated NWCT'S John Brown." The film won a 2023 Award of Merit from the CT League of History Organizations.

Both movies celebrate Connecticut heroes in the struggle for equality in the United States. John Brown's passion for equality was the inspiration for recording the John Brown song with CT musicians. The 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry's passion for equality inspired the Berlin Equity Action Team to tell their story.
