The Toledo Blade Editorial Board: “Mr. Moreno Boasted That As The Chairman Of The Board Of Trustees At Cleveland State University, He Drove The Confucius Institute Off The Campus… That’s, Um, Not A True Statement.”

Columbus, OH – The Toledo Blade Editorial Board on April 18th, slammed Bernie Moreno for “stretching the truth” and lying about getting rid of Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute. Moreno has already been called out for a series of “dubious claims” and “inconsistencies” that are “dogg[ing]” his campaign, including lying about selling Chinese-made cars, lying about “escap[ing]” socialism, and lying about his business origin story.

• Republicans and the rest of Ohio voters are now learning to their chagrin whom the GOP has nominated to be its Republican candidate.

• Mr. Moreno boasted that as the chairman of the board of trustees at Cleveland State University, he drove the Confucius Institute off the campus.

• “I chaired the board of trustees at Cleveland State University, and I’m very proud of the fact that when I was there, we got rid of our Confucius Institute,” Mr. Moreno said during a campaign event in March, 2023, the Columbus Dispatch recently reported. “We made certain that we focused everybody on student achievement, and we respected free speech on campus.”

• That’s, um, not a true statement. Mr. Moreno’s term on the board of trustees ended three years before the Confucius Institute was banned from Cleveland State’s campus.

• Not only that, Mr. Moreno held leadership positions on the board of trustees when the trustees approved university budgets that funded the program.

• He was vice chairman of the board when trustees passed a 2017 budget that gave roughly $38,000 to the institute.

• The Dispatch’s conclusion: “Taken together, Moreno’s claims appear to overstate his involvement in the institute’s closure.”
