Teens interested in legal or criminal justice careers may wish to volunteer with the Town’s Teen Court. Now is the time to apply, as volunteer training is occurring next month.

Teen Court is a community-based intervention/prevention program that provides an alternative to the justice system for first-time, nonviolent juvenile offenders. The program holds offenders accountable and promotes long-term behavioral change that leads to enhanced public safety.

Teens who volunteer with the program receive legal training and then sit on “peer panels” to decide the appropriate sanctions for youth offenders whose cases are heard in Teen Court.

Teen Court is looking for new volunteers and will host training between July 18 and 27. To get involved, apply online by July 8 at CRgov.com/TeenCourt.

The training sessions will be held at Castle Rock Municipal Court, 100 Perry St., from 10 a.m. to noon on July 18, 20, 21, 25 and 27. Two hours of independent training also will be required during this timeframe.

The group trainings are fun and interactive and will include guest speakers.

Teens interested in serving as forepersons will also be asked to attend an Aug. 1 training session.

Volunteers must be high school students during the 2022-23 school year. They receive community service credit, experience leadership opportunities and learn about the criminal justice and court systems.
