Town Of Newbury News - No dogs allowed on the beach May 15-Oct 15

From: Town Of Newbury

Mass Audubon has seen a significant increase in dog sightings and evidence of dogs on Newbury beaches in recent years. We would like to remind all residents, guests, and visitors that dogs are NOT ALLOWED on the Newbury beach between May 15 and October 15, even if they are on a leash. This rule is in place to help protect sensitive shorebird populations, such as Piping Plovers and Least Terns, that nest on the Plum Island beaches. Last year, Mass Audubon observed over 400 dogs on the beach, and we are on the way to exceeding that number this year with over 140 dogs observed already this season. Dogs have also been observed chasing Piping Plovers. Please refrain from bringing dogs with you when visiting Newbury beaches between May 15 and October 15, spread the word, and help us to protect these sensitive species! If you, your guests, or your renters have any questions, please reach out to the Conservation Agent via email ([email protected]) or phone (978-465-0862, ext 310).
