Get Ready! Here Comes Summer 2022!

What is more rare than a day in June? Well, the good news is we have 27 more of them to go. And, as the month progresses, the number of summer events will pick up. This week already brings special offerings, with an opening of the Norfolk Historical Society's summer exhibit--a look at Main Street as it existed 100 years ago. The historical society will also host a program Sunday about education in a one-room schoolhouse, while the Norfolk Lions are planning a pancake breakfast on Saturday to feed the body with good food and the soul with a convivial gathering. Then walk off the calories with the Land Trust's Connecticut Trails Day hike. Infinity Hall will make us laugh with a program by the Ivy League of Comedy and then bring Robert Cray to the stage Thursday with his trademark funky sound. On a more serious note, First Selectman Matt Riiska will detail the challenges of trash for a small town and the Norfolk Library offers a talk on Ghanaian culture. Municipal meetings include the Inland Wetlands Agency, Historic District Commission, Board of Education, Farmers Market Committee, Economic Development Commission and Rails to Trails.

Historical Society Opens Summer Exhibit

The Norfolk Historical Society opens its 62nd season with a look back to the days when every small town or big city boasted an active Main Street. All are invited to visit the Society's headquarters at 13 Village Green to explore how commerce evolved as Norfolk transformed from a sleepy manufacturing and farming village in the 1850s to a robust summer resort colony. The museum is open Fridays, 2:00 through 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 through 4:00 p.m. For more information, click here.

Lions Club Pancake Breakfast Saturday

The Norfolk Lions Club will hold a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday from 8:00 until 10:30 a.m. in the Botelle School Cafeteria, 128 Greenwoods Road East. Prices are: 13 and older, $6; 12 years and younger, $3.

Land Trust Plans Connecticut Trails Day Hike

The Norfolk Land Trust will hold a Connecticut Trails Day hike Saturday, June 4, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Kopp property, 220 Bruey Road. For more information about Connecticut Trails Day, click here.

One-Room Schoolhouse Program Sunday

The Norfolk Historical Society will present an illustrated slide program on early education in America Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Society's headquarters, 13 Village Green. Susan Webb, also known as the Traveling Schoolmarm, will take listeners back to the late-19th century with tales and adventures from her more than 20 years of researching the one-room schoolhouse.  For the past 20 years, she has come to Norfolk to give Botelle School’s fifth-grade history students a day of living history. The program, although geared to an adult audience, will be fun for the whole family. For more information, click here.

Municipal Meetings

This week is jammed with municipal meetings. Scheduled meetings include: Inland Wetlands Agency, Monday, 7:00 p.m.; Conservation Commission, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.; Historic District Commission, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.; Board of Education, Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.; Farmers Market Committee, Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.; Economic Development Commission, Thursday, 5:00 p.m., Rails to Trails, Thursday, 6:00 p.m. Remember, things change and sometimes meetings are cancelled, so check here before you head out the door.

And Coming Up Next ...
Perhaps the biggest event next week will be the June 12 rededication of the Battell Fountain on the Village Green. The fountain, given to the town 133 years ago by Mary Eldridge, has undergone extensive renovations over the past year. But the week actually opens with the "Hendrix of the Sahara" coming to Infinity Hall, followed by guitarist Andy McKee and then the group NRBQ. Great Mountain Forest will look at the woolly adelgid in its Forest Health series and parents and volunteers will be honored at a breakfast at Botelle School.
Visit the town website's calendar for all the other events planned. And, be sure to visit Weekend in Norfolk's YouTube channel where you'll find tours, music, art, kids' activities and a lot more.
