We are excited to have director Tommy Hyde join us for the screening and a discussion about his film afterwards!

Hardscrabble, Vermont dairy farmer Doug Butler has an offbeat passion: dog mushing. A local folk hero, Doug trains his team of mutts on the family farm with a dream to compete at the world dog mushing championships in Alaska. But the demands of being a small-scale family farmer in a changing world are constant. Keenly aware of the fate of the other family farms that used to dot the landscape, Doug has managed for years to play one creditor off against the next to survive another season. But with the debt now insurmountable and Doug’s thoughts plunging into depression, his dogs offer solace...and perhaps a way out. On a cold March morning Doug pulls out of his driveway in a rusted-out truck carrying 22 dogs, bound for Alaska. The journey will prepare him for what he’ll confront when he gets back: the sale of his farm and a race to craft a new destiny.

A timeless voice outlasts eras. It feels just as at home in the ’60s as it does in the TikTok age. It also resounds louder as time goes on. Haley Reinhart brandishes such a voice. The double platinum-certified Chicago-born/Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter exudes an empowering level of charisma and confidence earned by a quiet, decade-long grind.

Both 2022 and 2023 were banner years for Haley. From fall 2022 to fall 2023, Haley headlined her “Off The Ground Tour”. She played to rave reviews in over 100 theaters and rock rooms throughout North America.

In 2024, Haley has taken her career to another level. After writing and recording a new album, Haley will embark on her headline tour, which will run from May to November 2024. The show is just beginning.

Brandy Clark is one of her generation's most esteemed songwriters and musicians. In the midst of yet another landmark year, Clark released her widely acclaimed self-titled album this past spring and has just won her first Grammy Award.

The country simplicity that imbues Hayes Carll’s songs can sometimes hide the social conscience and sharp humor that also runs through them, but if you want to find those things, they are there. He makes us laugh––but then he makes us cry.

ONE LIFE

Maine Film Center

93 Main St, Waterville

Opening March 15

From $9

Eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund

We’re almost used to deliberately showstopping performances from multiple Academy Award-winner Sir Anthony Hopkins, but in One Life, he reaches his usual lofty heights with a quiet, understated (almost un-showstopping) performance, playing a true unsung hero. Based on the book If It's Not Impossible...: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton by Barbara Winton, One Life tells the incredible, emotional true story of Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton (Johnny Flynn), a young London broker who visits Prague in December 1938. In a race against time, Winton convinces the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue hundreds of predominantly Jewish children before Nazi occupation closes the borders. 50 years later, Nicky (Hopkins) is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England. It's not until the BBC show That's Life! re-introduces him to some of those he helped rescue that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he carried–all the while skyrocketing from anonymity to a national hero.
