Community Conversation: Stamford Youth Mental Health Alliance

Wednesday, November 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Join us for a panel discussion with community leaders about the mental health challenges young people often face and the support they need to achieve wellness.

This program includes a screening of selections from the documentary series Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness, produced by Ken Burns, Ewers Brothers Productions and Florentine Films. The film gives voice to the experiences of 20 young people who bravely share their stories of struggles with mental health challenges, focusing on the importance of awareness and empathy.

Women's Self-Defense Workshop

Saturday, December 3 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Club Kung Fu of Stamford will lead a female-focused self-defense workshop focusing on three phases: setting up boundaries and assessing the threat; learning the best way to strike using palms, elbows and knees; and defending against chokes, grabs and mounts.

Club Kung Fu practices the traditional Chinese martial art of Wing Tsun, which was originally created by Buddhist nun Ng Mui to defend against typically larger and stronger opponents.

Please wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. For teens and adults.

Representatives from Access Health CT will be on the library's second floor weekdays through January 13 to help you enroll in or renew a Qualified Health Plan (QHP) and/or Stand-Alone Dental Plan (SADP). Whether you are renewing coverage or looking at insurance options for the first time, Access Health CT can help you understand how to enroll and what to expect during Open Enrollment. Free Covid-19 vaccines and boosters will be available to adults and children from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Main Library on weekdays. No appointment necessary. Please bring your vaccine and insurance cards if you have them. In addition to primary vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna Bivariant boosters will be available.

More community clinics will be offered at the library through December 29. Clinic dates are posted weekly.

This clinic is offered in partnership with the Stamford Health Department and Griffin Health.

Tell Your Story Project

We are resuming our oral history project, Tell Your Story, an effort to capture Stamford's history through the lives of its residents. If you are a long-time resident and would like to share memories of growing up in Stamford, please let us know. We welcome photos and other memorabilia, too. Volunteers Wanted to Help English Language Learners

The Ferguson Library is looking for enthusiastic, sensitive volunteers interested in helping English language learners develop their speaking skills in our weekly, virtual classes.

We are looking for volunteers with the following qualities and availability:

-At least 18 years old.

-Tact, sensitivity and respect for people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

-Weekly availability for several consecutive months (or the equivalent of a college semester).

 No prior teaching experience required.

The library has a well-curated book discussion collection, with multiple copies of each book. We can also get books for you if we don't have the title and share resources about how to have a successful book discussion. And of course, our readers advisory services can help you find your group's next great read.
