Welcome David Gain!

The Whistler House Museum of Art is proud to introduce David Gain as the museum’s new Curatorial and Programs Manager. David received his B.A. in Applied History from Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts before interning at WHMA in 2019. While at the Whistler House he served as an Education Intern, providing an art history background to children attending the Multi-Cultural Youth Summer Art Program. David recently graduated from the Cooperstown Graduate Program at SUNY Oneonta with an M.A. in Museum Studies. He has worked with The Museum at Bethel Woods and the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive, connecting individual moments of artistry and resistance to wider historical themes.

As the Curatorial and Programs Manager, David will research and create programming around the museum’s locally and internationally renowned collection of 19th and early 20th century fine art, including works by James McNeill Whistler, Aldro Thompson Hibbard, and Arshile Gorky. He is excited to work in an historic building that unites a history of architecture, engineering, crafts, and fine art in the birthplace of one of America’s greatest artists. Constructed in 1823, the Whistler House represents the richness of the history and art of Lowell, and will be celebrating its two-hundredth anniversary in 2023. The Lowell Art Association, Inc. established the historic site as its permanent home in 1908, and continues to share Lowell’s history of art through educational and community-orientated programming.
