After-School Adventures
Bring your kids out to White Memorial for programs designed to awaken curiosity and foster an appreciation for the natural world. Every session brings a new adventure, whether it’s exploring a new part of White Memorial property, meeting a live animal, or taking part in an outdoor activity. Join us for an afternoon of experiential learning in the outdoors. Parents/Caregivers are welcome to stay, but it is not necessary. Meet in the A.B. Ceder Room. 3:45-5pm. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Please call 860-567-0857 or visit whitememorialcc.org to register. Space is limited. Masks are required for unvaccinated individuals. Members: $10/child per session or $35/whole series, Non-Members: $15/child per session or $55/whole series

March 1

Dark of Winter Yoga

This class will run for 17 weeks, from the change of the clock in November to the change of the clock in March, specifically November 9 to March 8. The class will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.. This class will meet on Zoom, but there are a few spaces in the studio for in-person students who are vaccinated (please contact me directly if interested). There is no previous yoga experience required. The purpose of the class is self-care during the winter season; increasing self-awareness, emotional balance, physical strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance. The class will integrate mindfulness, breath technique, yoga postures, kinesthetic awareness, and alignment in an hour of relaxing, quiet, guided movement.

The cost will be $100 paid by the first class for access to the whole season! Or pay for one class at a time, $10 per class. Money can be exchanged on Venmo, Square, Cash, or Check. Please contact Judith to make these arrangements. Each class attended donates $1 to White Memorial Conservation Center!! After you Contact Judith, the link for the class will be provided.

Her private practice, the Evolving Center, is in Winsted. She is a proud member of White Memorial Conservation Center, where she has been sharing her love of yoga for over 6 years!

Museum Children Free Week

Nature’s Nursery Series
4-5pm
Join us on the first Thursday of each month from January – April for an engaging program designed just for your young nature lovers. Every session will include a story, an encounter with a live animal, and an activity or craft. 4-5pm. Parents/Caregivers, we ask that you stay for the duration of the program. Meet in the A.B. What’s up with Woodchucks? Digging Deeper to Uncover Secrets of the Groundhog
with Nicole Morin from The Wild Center!

The Wild Center’s https://www.wildcenter.org/ biologist Nicole Morin and Norris the Woodchuck team up to discover the unique qualities of this common backyard animal and explore how they are responding to human-driven change. The Eastern Marmot (Marmota monax) are widespread in the Northeast, and familiar to many human communities. While well known marmots like Punxsutawney Phil keep us guessing, Norris and Nicole are here to share the science behind groundhog behavior. 2:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE, Non-Members: $10.00, Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Sunday Guided Museum Tour with Tom Saunders

You’ll learn so much more about Alain and May White and their generous gift to us, by spending time with Museum Docent, Tom Saunders! Tom is available to give tours on the first and third Sundays of every month at 2:00 pm or by appointment. Admission is FREE to Members and $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 12 - 6. There is free admission for children under the age of 6.

6th Annual Nature Trivia Night!

It’s back and bigger and better than ever! Come on, Brainiacs! Are you afraid of the challenge brought forth by our team of experts? Cerebrum, Cerebellum, Medulla Oblongata, Hippocampus…How big are yours? Are you even remotely prepared to test your nature knowledge at our 6th Annual Nature Trivia Night? Teams of up to six (we HIGHLY encourage team costumes) will compete for a valuable prize. Register individually, but form teams beforehand. No team? No problem! We’ll put you on a team when you arrive.

We’ll be serving a Chili supper with cornbread, rice and beans, salad, and dessert! Bring your own place setting and  BYOB. Coffee, tea, and water are provided too. Babies in Backpacks with Kelly Orr

For Ages 6 months to 2 years!

Come and explore the great outdoors in a way that your child can get excited about! The third Thursday of every month we will enjoy a hike with your child in a babywearing carrier or follow their pace if they are mobile.  There will only be expectations of exploring the world around us, not of a mile mark or speed.  Depending on the energy level of the group we will use our bodies to move in nature for 30 minutes, followed by an activity.  We will read books about the outdoors, enjoy touch and feel stations, use sand and water bins and more! This will be a year-round program. The goal is to encourage family time outdoors in all seasons.  We will still play outside in rain, snow, heat, and cold.  Unsafe weather will push us indoors.  Plan to get a little dirty, and come with weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen and bug spray as needed.  Caretakers must stay for the duration of the program. Please park in the horse trailer parking and meet in the Pollinator Garden.

STAR PARTY!

This astronomy program is organized by members of the Litchfield Hills Amateur Astronomy Club and the Mattatuck Astronomical Society. Weather permitting; there will be star gazing after the program. 7:00 P.M., A.B. Ceder Room. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. You are invited to bring your own telescope or binoculars. FREE… Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses.

Winter Wildlife Tracking with Andy Dobos

Andrew Dobos takes you on a wildlife tracking walk through the winter woods.  There are always clues left behind by the animals for us to decipher, telling a story of their habits and lives.  Get to know our beloved wildlife that much better. Children should be accompanied by an adult and all should dress extra warm and wear good boots!  You never know where the animals have been.10:00 A. M. – 12:00 P.M. Meet in the Museum. Exploring Duck Pond, Mallard Marsh, and Pine Island with Gerri Griswold

Let’s prowl around some of the prettiest and most vibrant trails close to White Memorial’s main campus. Will we find the first emerging skunk cabbages? See an otter or beaver? Encounter returning Wood Ducks? The beauty of Nature is that you never know what surprises await!  2:00 p.m., Meet in front of the A. B. Famous Animals in History with Gerri Griswold

They had names like Martha, Traveler, Stubby, Dan, Grip, and Sergeant Reckless. Many animals are attached to some of the most famous humans in history. Some animals made history on their own. Meet the beasts, hear their stories, and marvel over their accomplishments in this ninety-minute presentation which celebrates famous historical animals. 10:00 a.m., A. B. Kids Hike with Kelly Orr

For ages newborn and up!

Come and explore the great outdoors in a way that your child can get excited about! We will enjoy a hike with your child in a babywearing carrier or stroller.  If they are old enough to walk, they are welcome to do so. There will only be expectations of exploring the world around us, not of speed, or a mile mark.  We will walk for an hour, on an easy trail.  Dress for the weather, we will go rain, snow, or shine! Meet outside the A.B. Cedar Room, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. FREE…donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses.
