Students explore Embodied Words

Join us at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, for Chew on This! Books, Reading, and the Senses in the Middle Ages, an evening centered around unexpected and invigorating aspects of books and reading practices in the Middle Ages, ending in a medieval feast!

Students from the Williams Graduate Program in the History of Art and Williams’ Art Department will lead a series of short talks engaging objects and themes highlighted in the exhibition Embodied Words: Reading in Medieval Visual Christian Visual Culture. They will guide visitors beyond the gallery walls through discussion and StoryMaps, an online tool that allows viewers to read stories about art.

The program will illuminate diverse aspects of the exhibition—from the history of book theft, to the invention of punctuation as we know it, the role of text and reading within visual works, and the conception of libraries themselves. The feast will be served in the Rotunda following the talks, featuring a wide spread of period dishes and drinks.

Summer program youth opportunity

It may finally feel like spring, but we are already planning our summer series: Construct Your Own Meaning!

This series of programs, inspired by Remixing the Hall, invites cake artists, beer brewers, musicians, and—excitingly!—young people from the community to share their interpretations of artwork from our collection.

WCMA will host a week-long intensive fellowship for seven 10- to 13-year-olds from July 26 through Aug. 3. The fellows will get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s collection and different careers in the arts, and they will learn various methods for interpreting artwork. At the end of the program, the fellows will give a collaborative guided tour of Remixing the Hall designed for kids and adults from their communities.

If you know a young person who would be interested in applying for this fellowship, complete this application before April 21.
