Amelia Earhart Elementary School of International Studies was opened, along with John Glenn Middle School, in September of 2001 with the charge of becoming an International Baccalaureate World School. We worked towards that goal since our inception and received final authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland in February, 2005. The specific programme offered at AE School is the Primary Years Programme, which is based on the inquiry method of learning as well as instilling the principles of responsible global citizenship. In addition to the regular curriculum required by the state and district, each grade level writes six units of inquiry based on the six themes handed down by the International Baccalaureate Organisation: Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves and How We Share the Planet. Portfolios of student work are kept from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and at the end of 5th grade, the students complete a personal project or Exhibition, going in depth into a subject of their choice. As an homage to the international theme of our school, we celebrate an annual Festival of Nations in May wherein each classroom becomes a specific country and students travel the world with a passport and valise in hand to collect the fun artifacts and information that the teachers have prepared.
